The Breakdown - Episode 4 - Schoolboy and Cadet Duals Update Day 1

Simple results - lots of nuance lost in just the reporting of results. Will provide greater detail once we actually wrap-up the Greco and move onto Freestyle.

The bets example of what am I talking about is Anderson Heap of Florida . Heap’s name won’t show up below - he went 4-1 with his only loss coming to #1 Vincent Kilkeary of Pennsylvania on criteria (after wrestling 5 tough matches). But too little time to dig into that at the moment. Expect that level of analysis once we get the final breakdown.

Still good day for both Georgia and Florida Cadets … were in the hunt for All American pool status and came up just short. Tennessee Cadets lost two very close matches and fell all the way to 7th in their pool. We could see a Florida vs. Georgia schoolboy matchup tomorrow which will be fun, but Tennessee will finish above all others in the SE at schoolboys after making the Bronze/Copper Pool.

Freestyle and Greco State

As we head into Southeast Regions this coming weekend in Jacksonville, Florida … we have a clearer picture of those that might be contenders for a SE Region crown as well as a member of their state dual team or on the trip to Fargo.

Many states use their “State Championship” as a qualifier for duals and Fargo. Florida has previously used the Father Devine Tournament as a qualifier for the duals team, but that was two decades ago - I don’t know if that has changed in recent years. Regardless - we highlight those wrestlers that won a State Freestyle or Greco title this past weekend … you might see more them this summer.

For those of you unfamiliar (and so I don’t have to write it multiple times for multiple states) - here is a possible breakdown:

  • 14U are your likely representatives for a Schoolboy/Schoolgirl team if the state decides to compete in the Duals which will be held June 9th-13th in Franklin, Indiana.

  • 16U are your likely representatives for “Cadet" (although I don’t believe USA Wrestling is still using that designation) for the 16U Duals in Westfield, Indiana on June 9th-13rh.

  • Junior Champs are your likely representatives on the Junior Duals team (and possibly Junior National Team) that will be held June 15th-19th in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

What’s the saying … “Summer wrestling makes Winter Champions” - expect to see these names often over the next 12 months.

Malyke Hines Named EIWA Freshman of the Year

Lehigh's Malyke Hines has been named EIWA Freshman of the Year, it was announced following a vote of the league's head coaches.

Hines was one of four individual EIWA champions for the Mountain Hawks, who won their fourth consecutive team title in February at Spooky Nook Sports Complex.

The Kissimmee, Florida native went 8-3 in his deferred freshman season, competing at 133 pounds. Hines went 3-1 during the regular season, including a win up at 141 over Binghamton's Zack Trampe in Lehigh's come-from-behind win over the Bearcats in late January. He posted bonus-point victories in his first two bouts at the EIWA Championships before winning a 4-2 decision over Navy's Jacob Allen in the finals to claim the second of Lehigh's four individual championships.

Hines was the No. 17 seed at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, going 2-2. Both of his NCAA victories provided bonus points as he beat Oregon State's Devan Turner by an 8-0 major decision in the first round and then won his second round consolation by major decision over Sean Carter of Appalachian State. Hines' four major decision victories were tops on the Mountain Hawks during the 2021 season.

With this award, Hines becomes the sixth Lehigh wrestler to be named EIWA Freshman of the Year since the award's inception in 1994. Other Lehigh winners include Travis Doto (1997), Ryan Bernholz (1998), Mario Stuart (2001), Troy Letters (2002) and Stephen Dutton (2011).

Lehigh won its league leading 38th EIWA Championship in 2021 and Lehigh wrestlers have won a league-best 224 individual EIWA titles.
