State of the Program ... Cleburne County (AL)

By this time - many of you have seen that we are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 7 weeks. I was releasing one team a day, but with now over 115 teams having sent in information - I’ll try to ramp it up a bit so we can get as many in as possible before the first part of October. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone, but I will try to get to as many as possible. Please re-visit when the actual previews get dropped in October because what I am sharing below are just a few of the names the coaches have given me. Much more will be shared - plus SEWrestle’s “What to Expect” - in the team previews.

Cleburne County (Alabama)

Coach Jake Mayfield led the Tigers to an Alabama 1A-4A State Duals Title in 2021with wins over Saks, Weaver, (in a close one on the quarters), New Hope and 43-34 over traditional state champs Ashville in the finals. The tigers will rely on a core group to help get them back to that level again in 2022.

Keep an eye on State Placer Shamar Heard and State Qualifiers Austen Mayfield, Ronin Brewer, Brennen Butler and Russell Clanton to lead the team into the 2021-2022 season. Look for Zac Scott to make some noise in 2022 also.

Look for other teams to be highlighted over the next 7 weeks.

WE NEED YOUR HELP … We are in the process of collecting as much information as possible and would love for coaches to reach out and share their information. If you are a coach and would like to provide that information please click the “Team Preview” button below to be sent to a survey.

State of the Program ... Arab (AL)

We are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 7 weeks. Today’s highlight is Arab High School (Alabama). Keep in mind this isn’t the entire team preview for any of these teams … this is just a sample of what will be released in several weeks.

The Knights are led by Coach Kyle Routon, who finished 2nd in the 5A-6A Alabama State Tournament and lost to eventual Champs Gardendale in the State Dual semis. The Knights are one of the top programs in the state - year in and year out - and 2021-2022 will be no different.

The Knights are led by returning State Champ Caleb Roe and State Placers Patrick Lawler and Johnathan Pugh, but you better keep an eye on this group:

  • Kaden King

  • Josh Roe

  • Jaxon Ivey

  • Tyler Collins

  • Logan Silva

Cabe Dunn, Austin Silva, and Conner Knighton are three that should make some noise in 2022.

We came up a little short to Gardendale in the Dual Semi-Final losing 32-27 and then finished 11 points behind them at the individual tournament. That has fueled these guys this summer. I have been impressed with not only the work they have put in on the mat but the work in the weight room. As a team we have gotten a lot stronger.

State of the Program ... Mountain Brook (AL)

We are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 7 weeks. Today’s highlight is Mountain Brook High School (Alabama). Keep in mind this isn’t the entire team preview for any of these teams … this is just a sample of what will be released in several weeks.

The Spartans are led by Coach Justin Ransom who enters his 9th season. The Spartans finished 20th at the 2021 5A-6A Alabama Traditional State Tournament, but return 3 State Placers and a lot of talent. Is Mountain Brook one of the teams that will challenge Gardendale for the team title?

The Spartans return State Placers

  • Harrison England (8th @ 132)

  • Gray Ortis (3rd @ 145)

  • Woody Fipps (7th @ 152)

They also return several State Qualifiers in:

  • Jude Smith

  • Stuart Andrews

  • Coleman Bates

  • Will Robinson

  • Michael Lorino

  • William Courtenay

We are looking to get wrestlers in the right weight classes during the year to help strengthen our lineup. We have several rising 8th/9th graders that will likely find a spot and make an impact. After a great start to the summer and competitions we are looking to build on last year.
— Coach Ransom

Newcomers to watch might include Bill Bradford, Hardy McDonald, Luke Ankeny, and Daniel Ellis.
