State of the Program ... Hoover (AL)

By this time - many of you have seen that we are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 6 weeks. I was releasing one team a day, but with now over 170 teams having sent in information - I’ll try to ramp it up a bit so we can get as many in as possible before the first part of October. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone, but I will try to get to as many as possible.

Please re-visit when the actual previews get dropped in October because what I am sharing below are just a few of the names the coaches have given me. Much more will be shared - plus SEWrestle’s “What to Expect” - in the team previews. Lastly, if you want to know whether we have your form … you can find the list of everyone that has submitted a form in the blog archive.

Hoover (AL)

Coach Lamey takes over at Hoover and does so without 2x State Champ Nick Smith and State Runners-up JT Foster and Dawson Rye - all 3 graduated in 2021. But the cupboard is far from bare for the Bucs and Coach Lamey. State Placer Ty Sisson returns for his Junior season and 2021 State Runner-up Jack Lamey comes over from Vestavia to lead the next group of Bucs.

Hoover also returns several State Qualifiers that will look to make the podium in 2022 … Both Broc Metcalf and Logan Roberts won multiple matches a year ago and should be in the hunt for a spot high on the podium. Alex Carbajal, Keith Christein, Sky Niblett, and Baylor Hardy also return and should be in the hunt as well. Keep an eye on Hampton Irvine and Jake Thompson - both could make an impact in 2022.

If we are able to focus on what we can control, we have a chance to be very competitive.
— Coach Lamey

WE NEED YOUR HELP … We are in the process of collecting as much information as possible and would love for coaches to reach out and share their information. If you are a coach and would like to provide that information please click the “Team Preview” button below to be sent to a survey.

Pelham (AL)

Pelham made a run at last year’s 5A-6A State Tournament and with the returning group looks to be in position again to make some noise in the post-season. State Runner-up Seth Branham and State Placers Bryce Wanagat and Jake Ingram return and each should be hunting an individual title as well as pushing their team in the team race.

Pelham returns 8 other State Qualifiers and if each can score points and find the podium - this team will be tough to beat come February. Keep an eye on Trae Peeler, Noah Schilleci, Stone Pearson, and Zander Terry … each won multiple matches at state last year and will be key if the Panthers are going to be in the hunt for a team title.

Lots of underclassmen that we had a few years ago are now upperclassmen and have gained a ton of experience. We’re looking for these guys to build on top of the top 10 finish we had last season and just develop our guys the best we can to put them in the best position possible to succeed.

Piedmont (AL)

Piedmont made a great run in 2021 - finishing 7th in the Alabama 1A-4A State Tournament and crowning a State Champ in Dylan Melendez as well as having JT Coheely and Jalon Helm make the podium. But with a small program and 5 Seniors that have graduated … Piedmont Coach Paul Lynch will turn to his youngsters in 2021-2022.

Jalon Helm returns after taking 3rd at 182 as an 8th grader and could really make some noise as he continues to progress over the next several years. He is joined by returning State Qualifiers Izak Duke and Chase Jenkins. The trio will look to lead the way for the next pack of Bulldogs.

Piedmont graduated 5 good seniors this past season so we have a very young team this year. Have several middle schoolers moving up to join our 9 returning wrestlers. Though we will have only have 4 wrestlers in the top three grades (3 juniors and 1 sophomore) we do have several bright spots in the line up. Looking forward to a great season!
