By this time - many of you have seen that we are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 6 weeks. I was releasing one team a day, but with now over 170 teams having sent in information - I’ll try to ramp it up a bit so we can get as many in as possible before the first part of October. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone, but I will try to get to as many as possible.

Please re-visit when the actual previews get dropped in October because what I am sharing below are just a few of the names the coaches have given me. Much more will be shared - plus SEWrestle’s “What to Expect” - in the team previews. Lastly, if you want to know whether we have your form … you can find the list of everyone that has submitted a form in the blog archive.

Coach Held enters his 36th year and has been around long enough to know when he has a team that compete in ultra-tough Florida 3A (especially Region 4) and when he doesn’t. This year’s group should be very good - especially with the addition of 2x State Qualifier Zach Weidler from American Heritage Delray Beach. Not only does Cypress Bay have 4 other state qualifiers return from 2021, but 3 of them (Andrew Punzalan, Connor Ivory, and Rafael Diniz) each won matches in Kissimmee.

Add in State Qualifier Jared Campbell and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Lightening put up to 5 on the podium in March. Keep an eye on Gabriel Herrero, Jordan Escarra, and Javier Veras - each won matches in tough Region 4 and will look to punch their ticket to Kissimmee in 2022.

We expect to be very competitive in 3A. With 5 returning State qualifiers and 3 that lost in the blood round at regions, we expect to be a top ten team in 3A.

Joe Gonzalez claimed the 145 lb. 3A State Title in 2021 and in doing so ended a nearly 20-year drought for the Wildcats (Derrick Henson won the 119 lb. title in 1993). But this isn’t just a one-man show … Winter Park also returns 2021 State Qualifier James Gonzalez as well as Joey Parker and Tristen Carbonell who will look to punch their ticket to the state tournament in 2022.

Keep an eye on a few of the other Cats as we enter the 21-22 season … Aladio Thompson, Teddy Barry, and Aaliyah Gonzalez each made the region tournament in 2021 and will look to better that in 2022. Another name to watch for is Isaiah Smith - the senior heavyweight could make an impact in 2022.

After tallying the best season in over 30 years, we look to capitalize on the momentum of the success. With a state champion returning from last year, “iron sharpens iron” and our young Gunnz are starting to grow up.

The Bears graduated State Champ Marvin Collins, State Placer Harlan McCandless, and State Qualifier Joe Burgess, but Coach Rocky Ciero returns a squad that could be even better in 2021-2022. The Bears finished 5th in the 2A Traditional State Tournament and have all the pieces to make a serious run at the title in 2022.

State Champion Dylan Deal, State Runner-up Riley Chapdelaine, and State Placer Davis Deal all return for their senior season and will be looking to take the top step both individually and help the Bears bring home a team trophy as well. State Qualifier Elijah Penton had a good run in Fargo and looks poised for a breakout season.

How high the Bears climb will likely fall to how well the following wrestlers do in 2022 … Keep an eye on:

  • Seniors Silas Mantero, Luis Valdes and Aiden Reichert

  • Juniors Aiden Gatton and Elias Rodriguez

  • as well as a bunch of Sophomores and Freshmen

Our coaches and wrestlers both believe that we are ready to take that next step and move up the podium, both individually and as a team. We have a strong senior class and a good group of younger/experienced wrestlers. We are looking forward to both the dual series and IBT championships.
