Suncoast (FL)

Head Coach: Daniel Tria (entering 6th season)

The Chargers graduate their 2022 hammer in State Qualifier Holden Kapsos as well as Sebastian Maccaulay, Yumandy Espinosa and Blake Allen. That leaves a very young roster and one that will feature several new faces in 22-23. Vinny Berkoff and Aidan Higgins should lead the way and will be bolstered by the return of Anthony Manzo and Sebastian Cordon-Cano who missed the post-season a year ago with injuries. Keep an eye on Cristofer Canedo-Ortiz, Alan Ramirez, and Melville Spencer … each will look to make their mark this season as well.

The Chargers are exceptionally young, but have a ton of freshman that could make the most of their opportunity this season. Liam Aylor, Max Myers, Jonathan Green, Tony Mancuso, and Julian Brady will be in the mix for a varsity spot down low. Ivan Leon, Gabe Tavares, and Abdul Rahman will look to break into the middle part of the lineup (138-182) where the Chargers should be the toughest. Keep an eye on freshmen CJ Crawford and Levi Shatkhin as well as Junior Nick Hardy up top. Others to watch include Josh Marrone and Sebastian Gadala-Maria. The Chargers will be young this season (Higgins might be their only Senior in the lineup) - it will be interesting to see how they continue to develop as the season goes along.

However, the coaches and I are very encouraged by how hard the new wrestlers work in pre-season. Sebastian Cordon-Cano and Anthony Manzo comes both return from a season ending injuries and spent the summer improving. The leadership roles fall to Cordon-Cano, Manzo, Vinny Berkoff and Aidan Higgins. Our team believes in hard work, and it will be the mark of who we are.”

Mainland Girls (FL)

Head Coach: Helena Carey (entering 3rd season)

Staff: Matt Lawrence, Karol Piedad, Andrew Wang

Mainland jumped right out of the gate a season ago - putting two on the podium and finishing 16th as a team. State Qualifier Abby Couillard has graduated, but the Bucs return State Placers Jah’Mya Hill and Cheyenne Wigley. This is a team that will be tough up top with Hill and Wigley as well as Trinya Tillman, Eva Rojas, and Katherine Meza Perez. Hill and Wigley should be hunting the top step in 2023 and if the Bucs can fill out the roster down low they could be a team that makes some noise this season.

“We have 2 returning state placers leading a very strong group of girls at the upper weights. With some new girls coming out in the smaller classes, we should be able to compete at some tournaments as a team.”

Florida High (FL)

Head Coach: Clay Allen

Jaylyn Middleton was the only girl on the roster a season ago … she returns looking to punch her ticket to the state tournament this season.
