State of the Program ... Mt Pisgah (GA)

By this time - many of you have seen that we are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 6 weeks. I was releasing one team a day, but with now over 170 teams having sent in information - I’ll try to ramp it up a bit so we can get as many in as possible before the first part of October. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone, but I will try to get to as many as possible.

Please re-visit when the actual previews get dropped in October because what I am sharing below are just a few of the names the coaches have given me. Much more will be shared - plus SEWrestle’s “What to Expect” - in the team previews. Lastly, if you want to know whether we have your form … you can find the list of everyone that has submitted a form in the blog archive.

Mt Pisgah (Georgia)

The 2020-21 Mt Pisgah team were world beaters … they had few holes in their lineup and claimed the Georgia 1A Dual and Traditional titles. But the Patriots lost a ton of firepower to graduation … State Champs David Bertrand and Josh Noble as well as State Placers Catherine-Grace Bertrand and Jake Piccirilli are all gone. As are Brad Spence and Happy Chance who both contributed in a significant way to those titles. That said - I love this quote from Coach Merry …

I feel after winning the state championship last year we are going to be overlooked since we graduated a solid senior class, but I’m super excited for this years team. They put in a lot of work during the summer and they already have a chip on their shoulders from all the doubters. I feel we’re going to turn a lot of heads again! It should be a fun year!
— Coach Merry

And no one should be overlooking years group … they have some hammers in the lineup including returning State Champs Tyler Nelson and Joey Bertrand as well as State Runner-up Marley Washington. They key for Mt Pisgah - in my opinion - will be:

  • Can 2021 State Placers Josh Lange and Cole Spence climb to the top of the podium

  • Can 2021 State Qualifiers Brady Nardella and Josh Fuentas climb onto the podium and

  • Can Joy Chane, Aidan Schmitz, Brogan Woods, and others step up and get points for the Patriots.

North Hall (Georgia)

North Hall had an outstanding season and from top to bottom were incredibly tough to beat in 3A. They lose a ton of firepower with the graduation of State Champs Damon Campbell, Jacob Pedraza, and Jackson Whitmire as well as State Placers Dalton Battle, Cristian Contreras, Eli Domingo, and Nolan Sorrow. Teams don’t lose 75% of their state points (162 of 218) and don’t take at least a small step back.

The Trojans do return two outstanding Seniors to lead the way for the new crop. State Champ Hunter Adams and State Runner-up Dawson Thompson return and both will be hunting the top step in 2022. They will also be charged with bringing on a talented group behind them. Tristan Bassett, Joey Carew, and Ethan Powers each return after qualifying for the state tournament a year ago and each will be looking to make the podium in 2022.

North Hall has to be excited with the next wave - keep an eye on these names as we continue throughout the season … Jackson Martin, Zeke Harris, Conner Free and freshmen Landon Martin and Hunter Farmer.

We have an exciting team coming into this season with a ton of talent. We are mixture of accomplished veterans and young up and comers. I am excited to see what this team can accomplish. We have a strong tradition and North Hall to uphold and this group is up to the challenge.

St Anne Pacelli (Georgia)

Coach Adrian Anderson moves into his 34th season and do so with a good lineup that could make some noise in 1A. Why do we think Pacelli has an opportunity to make some noise?

  • Pacelli finished the 2021 Traditional tournament in 16th.

  • Every wrestler that scored points in the 2021 state tournament returns including Jude Niemi, Anthony Vasquez, Conar Blevins, and George Hopkins who each won several matches and will certainly be looking for a spot on the podium in 2022.

  • Pacelli also returns 4 wrestlers (Jud Allen, Parker Mertens, DeWitt Hill, and Efrain Ramos) that won one match in Macon and another 2 (Vesga and Ezell) who qualified.

  • That leaves 10 wrestlers with post-season experience returning for another season.

  • Add in a trio of freshmen - Max Hall, Noah Kirkenal, and Nicholas Nugent - as well as a few others and you will have a team that will be any of the duals or tournaments they enter this season.

This team has paid a lot of dues coming through the ranks and has put in a lot of work over the summer. Still a long way to go to reach their goals but they are doing the right things.
