By this time - many of you have seen that we are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 6 weeks. I was releasing one team a day, but with now over 170 teams having sent in information - I’ll try to ramp it up a bit so we can get as many in as possible before the first part of October. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone, but I will try to get to as many as possible.

Please re-visit when the actual previews get dropped in October because what I am sharing below are just a few of the names the coaches have given me. Much more will be shared - plus SEWrestle’s “What to Expect” - in the team previews. Lastly, if you want to know whether we have your form … you can find the list of everyone that has submitted a form in the blog archive.

Central, Carroll (GA)

Central finished 5th at the 4A State Traditional Tournament in February and were 4th in the 4A Dual Tournament. That said - they lose some horses from the 2020-21 squad … namely State Placers Ethan Askin, Cortland Caldwell, and Caden Horseley. The Lions do return their most important wrestler and leader - State Champ Aaron Sheffield. Sheffield has a core group around him that should help make the team competitive in 2022.

Sheffield is joined by State Qualifiers Owen Warren, Gunthar Walker, and Jackson Warren. Owen Warren and Gunther each won several matches in Macon and will look to join Sheffield on the podium. Keep an eye on Kaleb Disharoon as well as a bunch of freshmen that will look to make their mark.

We are both humbled and blessed by the opportunity to compete in such a tough region and classification. We have a core that truly loves each other and has started bonding this summer, and that is one of the greatest weapons to have. We are excited by our opportunities this season.

Dade County (GA)

Coach Poston might want us to keep it quiet, but Dade County has to be one of the teams to beat in Georgia 2A in 2022. The Wolverines took 2nd in Duals in 2021 - losing to Oglethorpe County in the state finals - and then finished 7th at the Traditional tournament. They return the 2nd most points from last year’s state tournament of any team in 2A - behind Bremen - and should be in the mix for a trophy when all is said and done.

Dade County return State Champ Cody Williams as well as State Placers Landon Williams, Zac Smith, Jake Gatlin, and Austin Sorrelle. This is a senior-heavy squad with a ton of experience and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see as many as 8 Wolverines on the podium in Macon.

Cayden Cooper, Brandon Willerson, and Hayden Langley each won multiple matches at last year’s state tournament and will look to make the podium in 2022. Keep an eye on State Qualifiers Garrett Dunn and Dakota Whitmore as well … both had success in Macon and could play important roles in whether the Wolverines take home the team trophy or not.

We have the kids to win it all, but there is a long time between now and January and February. I feel like Covid impacted our success at Traditional last season. We lost two kids going into Area, and that cost us points. I hope we get the opportunity to wrestle with everyone this time around. In the end, we’re not focused on outcomes or results, we’re focused on us, and trying to get better as a team every day. Wherever that takes us, we will take it.

Harris County (GA)

Harris County finished 4th in the Georgia 5A Traditional tournament behind Woodland, Cass, and Woodward Academy. Harris County showed they can wrestle with anyone as they finished 14th at the 2020 Knockout - just behind Florida 2A State Champs Charlotte.

Harris County returns State Runner-up Glen Decker as well as State Placers Davin Lundquist and Garrett Wood. They also return 4 State Qualifiers in Jack Henson, Davis Culpepper, Ryan Gilbert, and Damon McMillan. This is a team that has 7-8 wrestlers in the lineup that will be very tough to beat. How high they climb might come down to how well Hunter Lardinious, Nick Nguyen, and others wrestle. Keep an eye on a trio of freshmen that will look to make their mark in 2022 … Denver Degonia, Tyler McGuire, and Matt Vanwettering.

We have a chance to make the GHSA State Duals for the 6th straight year. We return 11 starters off of last year’s team but each of those we lost were in the state finals last year. We will need to figure out who will replace those hammers in the lineup.
