Vidalia (GA)

Vidalia finished up their 2020-2021 campaign in 6th in the Georgia 2A State Tournament. They will need to replace some heavy “hitters” in the line-up, but this is a team that has quality depth and should be back in the hunt in 2022. Gone are State Champs Thomas Godbee and Jaylin Burns as well as State Runner-up Dawson Campbell. The three accounted for more than 60% of the Tribe’s state tournament points in 2021.

So why do we feel optimistic about Vidalia in 2021-2022? They return 3 Senior State Placers in State Champ Hunter Manning and State Placers Javarius Worthen and Damian Townsel. They also return State Qualifiers Chandler Corbett, Tykee Fields, Omarion Oglesby, and Deante Terrell. Finally they have quality depth and will look for Mykiel Johnson, Ah’Melion Jones and others to step up and fill the gaps. Keep an eye on a pair of freshmen in Deuce Hightower and Jack Godbee.

We are looking at taking the next step. Roll Tribe!

By this time - many of you have seen that we are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 6 weeks. I was releasing one team a day, but with now over 170 teams having sent in information - I’ll try to ramp it up a bit so we can get as many in as possible before the first part of October. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone, but I will try to get to as many as possible.

Please re-visit when the actual previews get dropped in October because what I am sharing below are just a few of the names the coaches have given me. Much more will be shared - plus SEWrestle’s “What to Expect” - in the team previews. Lastly, if you want to know whether we have your form … you can find the list of everyone that has submitted a form in the blog archive.

Cambridge (GA)

The Bears return after finishing 4th in super deep Georgia 6A in 2021 and don’t be fooled … this team has all of the pieces to make a serious run at the title. Coach St James does lose State Placers Nick Barton, Evan Kurtz, Ben Werth, and Connor McHugh - which accounted for more than 35% of their points at the state tournament a year ago, but this is a team that always has the horses ready to step up and take the next open spot in the lineup.

State Runner-up Sebastian Shered and State Placer Cullen Kane both return and will be hunting for a the top spot on the podium in 2022. Add in State Qualifiers Christoper Patten, Mason Truncale, and Kalem Kozma and the Bears should be in the mix for a top 5 finish again in 2022. The key to how high the Bears climb could come down to how well their heavyweights wrestle … keep an eye on Cam Phillips, Walker Hicks, Thomas Parrott, and Drew Petit. Two freshmen to watch are Hunter Keane and Ty Tosi.

We have 9 State Qualifiers back and we should be competitive with most teams as long as we do not get injuries that have hampered us in the past. We lack depth so we may struggle if we need to juggle the line up to win a big dual.
