Five on the Rise
Remember this is focused solely on the Greco portion of the weekend. I didn’t get to watch the matches live (I was working on Friday), but have gone back and watched the majority of them through FloWrestling. These are the 5 that stood out to me. Remember these are all kids from the SE - might have been really impressed by a kid from somewhere else in the country, but they won’t make this list.
Juniors
Christian Guzman (FL) - Guzman is another wrestler that looked outstanding in the Greco bracket … 113 wasn’t very deep, but Terrell, Gehr, etc. are tough and Guzman cruised - not yielding a point.
Hunter Mason (TN) - Mason was simply the best on the mat in the deepest weight of the tournament. You could make the argument that Singleton was the best overall and the Junior World Team Member was simply outstanding - no doubt. But Mason’s level of competition was outstanding and he hammered the competition (beating Reese Jones, Dylan Layton, and Hayden Whidden).
Matthew Singleton (GA) - putting Singleton here seems questionable, but only because he is already at the top (Junior World Team Member). But his run through the bracket was impressive none the less. His 5 early in the tournament was plain nasty.
Devin Stone (AL) - Stone was the only one of the five listed that did not win his weight. He fell to Alex Almeyda in the finals at 138. But Stone was impressive in a tough weight class. He had 3 falls (and some nice 4 pointers) before losing to Almeyda.
Tyler Washburn (FL) - Washburn was already a superb wrestler, but the ability to work with Varona, Ison, and the Garage Boyz room seems to be really paying dividends - especially on the Greco side. 106 wasn’t particularly tough or deep, but Washburn was far and away the best in the weight. It will be interesting to see how he fairs in Fargo or Oklahoma later this summer.
Several other wrestlers stood out as well. Alabama’s Yanni Vines downed Dominic Ditomasso 16-8 and Darrell Rochester 2-1 to claim the 120 title. Florida’s Cooper Haase looked great at 126 beating Oren Decker of Georgia in the finals. Reese Jones, Dylan Layton, and Hayden Whidden wrestled well, but were in the same weight as Mason. Carson Miller (who I thought was from Florida- but it says Virginia) beat Sam Harris 7-6 in the 145 lb. finals. Miller also beat Latona 6-5 in the semis.
Tennessee’s Garrett Foreman won 152, but had to work for it. Downing Marc Kelyman 9-8 and Oliver Howard of Alabama 5-4. Florida’s Alex Couto took the 160 lb. title and won a tough 5-4 semi over Alabama’s Jakob Chisolm. Tennessee’s Bowers made the finals opposite Singleton at 170 and Georgia’s Will Parker made the finals at 182. Florida’s Tal Shahar was simply outstanding and could have been one of the 5 above - he dominated the 195 lb. bracket. Alabama’s Zogg was 2nd at 285.
Cadets (16U)
Brandon Cody (FL) - Cody wrestled superb on his way to the 138 lb title. He beat Yannis Charles 13-2, Saenz 10-0, Sanchez 10-0, and then downed Cade Parent of Georgia 6-0 in the finals.
Anderson Heap (FL) - Heap had a good run through the 120 lb. bracket … he downed Noah Smith of Alabama 14-3, Luis Acevedo 12-0 before pinning Hudson Waldrop in the semis. A 10-4 win over RI’s Hayden Myers capped off his day.
Hoke Poe Hogan (GA) - Really good day for Poe-Hogan. He beat Harvey Ludington of New Jersey 6-5 in an opening round thriller and downed Florida’s Brian Burburija 6-2 in the 170 lb. finals.
Ethan Mojena (FL) - Mojena took care of business in a very tough 145 lb. bracket. His 4-3 finals match over Duncan Christensen is the type of match you have to win make the podium in Fargo.
Hunter Sturgill (TN) - Sturgill claimed the 126 lb. title with 3 consecutive superior decisions without yielding a point before downing Georgia’s Collin Mullins 11-7 in the finals.
Many other Cadets had outstanding tournaments as well and some just missed the top 5 mentioned above. Drew Gorman won one of the deepest weights at 113. He beat Donny Almeyda 6-5 in the opening round before taking out Brodie Christmas and Luke Lilledahl. An outstanding day for Gorman (and just one of a handful to take titles in both styles). Georgia’s Collin Mullins had a nice run through the bottom side of the 126 lb. bracket before falling to Sturgill in the 126 lb. final. Georgia’s Cade Parent looked good on the top side of the 138 lb. bracket before losing in the finals to Cody.
Christopher Sanchez, Clay Johnston, and Cole Sykes each made the podium at 152. Roman Garcia downed fellow Floridian Omer Barak to claim the 160 lb. title. Burburija was 2nd at 170 and Alabama’s Will Conlon was 2nd at 182. Nicolas Jenkins took the title at 195 and Florida’s Jonathan Fraga claimed the title at 220.
Schoolboys (14U)
Hudson Chittum (TN) - Chittum rolled in 2 matches and then had some work to do in 2 others. His 5-1 win over Everett Stephens to begin the day and his 5-4 win over Caleb Noble to end the day were nice bookend wins to take the title at 71 lbs.
Cooper McArthur (GA) - 77 lbs. was a good weight from top to bottom and McArthur handled things easily. He had a fall before downing Holton Quincey and Drew Dawson with superior decisions.
Michael Mocco (FL) - I picked Mocco as one of the top 5 because of his ability to grind out two wins after losing his first match to DJ Wilson. Mocco lost 9-5, but bounced back to down Wilson 4-3 and 9-5 and win the 165 lb. title.
Blue Stiffler (SC) - Stiffler was unchallenged at 136 - he spent just a minute on the mat in claiming the 136 lb. title.
Chase Walker (TN) - Walker won a very good 102 lb. weight class. He beat Stone Phillips 13-10 in the opening round (Phillips came back to take 3rd) and then beat Florida’s Nikolas Gray 10-0 before downing Alabama’s Kiowa Vines 5-1 to take the title. Really good wrestling in a very good weight.
A few others names popped up as I was watching the Greco Schoolboys do work. Keep an eye on 71 lber Everett Stephens of Florida - took 3rd, but wrestled tough. Already mentioned that 77 was a tough weight - McArthur won, but Cordero was 3rd and avenged his only loss in the consi finals - beating Chris Swann. Florida’s William Buckley won 83 and Adaias Ortiz was 3rd at 92. Nathaniel Boger of Tennessee was a double champ - taking the Greco title at 97 - had to eek out a 7-6 win over Taj Jones of Georgia earlier in the tournament.
Alabama’s Kiowa Vines was 2nd and Stone Phillips 3rd in a tough 102 lb. bracket. Zeno Moore lost a close one to Gabriel Logan for the 106 lb. title - Zac Bosken was 3rd at the weight. Andres Dirrigoli of Florida took home the 110 lb. title and Bradley Williams of Alabama was 2nd at 114. Tennessee’s Cy Fowler finished 2nd at 149 and Florida’s Erniet Perez claimed the 187 lb. title.
