State of the Program ... Palmetto (SC)

By this time - many of you have seen that we are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 6 weeks. I was releasing one team a day, but with now over 170 teams having sent in information - I’ll try to ramp it up a bit so we can get as many in as possible before the first part of October. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone, but I will try to get to as many as possible.

Please re-visit when the actual previews get dropped in October because what I am sharing below are just a few of the names the coaches have given me. Much more will be shared - plus SEWrestle’s “What to Expect” - in the team previews. Lastly, if you want to know whether we have your form … you can find the list of everyone that has submitted a form in the blog archive.

Palmetto (SC)

Palmetto qualified two for the 3A State Tournament a year ago (in a season that saw fewer than normal qualifiers in South Carolina due to Covid restrictions). The Mustangs return one of the two in Christian DeFronzo. Christian and Eric Perez both finished 4th at 3A Upper State and just missed joining DeFronzo at the state tournament … expect both of them to be hunting for a ticket in 2022.

Gabe Harvey, CJ Moody, and Jacob Alberson also return and will look to make some noise in 2022. Keep an eye on freshman Ridge Martin and a pair of Seniors in Dustin Clark and Jacob Hamby. As Coach Cornell states below … this is a team that might be under the radar to start the season, but could work themselves into a “good spot” in order to make a run in the end.

Palmetto will be a dark horse coming into the season, but with depth may find themselves in a good spot for a playoff run.
— Coach Cornell

WE NEED YOUR HELP … We are in the process of collecting as much information as possible and would love for coaches to reach out and share their information. If you are a coach and would like to provide that information please click the “Team Preview” button below to be sent to a survey.

Coach Boulware enters season #5 and the Seahawks look ready to soar in 2022. They finished 7th at the 4A Traditional State Tournament and lose State Champ James Levy, but return State Placer Zao Estrada and Drew Vigh as well as State Qualifier KJ Holland (in a year when South Carolina allowed significantly fewer wrestlers in the state tournament as compared to previous seasons).

Keep an eye on Devin Espinoza and Sebastian Agnew as well as incoming freshman Calvin Clayton … each should play a role in helping the Seahawks work their way into the top 5.

Team is looking very strong coming in to the upcoming season. We have two holes to fill only losing senior state champion James levy and Senior heavyweight SQ Peter Rougeux but we have some newcomers who are ready to break the varsity lineup. Last years team set the bar making it to the lower state championship against crosstown rival May River. We have 3 state qualifiers returning ready to push this years team to another winning season. I am so pumped about what we have going on here on the island and the path that we are heading this season should be one for the books.

State of the Program ... Walhalla (SC)

We are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 7 weeks. Today’s highlight is Walhalla High School (South Carolina). Keep in mind this isn’t the entire team preview for any of these teams … this is just a sample of what will be released in several weeks.

The Razorbacks are led by Coach Jeff Rice. Coach Rice took over a year ago and had 4 Razorbacks at the Upper State Tournament in 2021. Two of those return along with a new group that will look to make an impression in 2021-2022.

Tyas Nellams and Christian Ellis shoudl lead the way, but keep an eye on David Stone, Siler Kerr, Hunter Lusk and Ethan Weisner. Two freshmen ready to make some noise are Hunter Kendall and Caleb Fortson.

The guys have been putting in some good work over the summer and are ready to get this season started. We have a young group of hungry guys looking to build off of a solid first season with our new head coach. We have a tough schedule that will get the guys ready to bring home some hardware at the end of the season.
— Coach Tripp Williams

Look for other teams to be highlighted over the next 7 weeks.
