What to Know from the Weekend of Dec 11-12

Here is a glimpse into some of the information that is in SEWrestle+. Each week we try to gather a bunch of the individual accomplishments from the weekend and post it as a “What to Know from the Weekend”. Below is this week’s What to Know for everyone …

If you are interested in the team scores or the individual champs please visit the Breakdown. This is focused on wrestlers that stood out - whether they won their weight or not … so wrestlers that fought back through to get 3rd, wrestlers that got falls (bonus points are important), those that earned the most team points, and most importantly those that proved they were the “Bad Seed” in a tournament - meaning they were not seeded very high, but found a way to beat those seeded above them to either claim a title or make the podium.

Alabama

  • Hewitt-Trussville looked sharp this weekend in claiming the Swede Umbach title over Lee County (GA), Lambert (GA), and others.

    • August Baton of Atlantic and Mateo Gelman of Cooper City also had 4 falls.

Captain Archer Memorial Classic at Charlotte

  • Charlotte - one of the top teams in 2A - was dominant over a tough field as they cruised to the team title. Charlotte crowned 5 individual champs and put another 7 on the podium. This is a team that is going to be a problem in the post-season.

  • 6 wrestlers earned 30 points for their teams

    • Koen Hoffman of Lemon Bay

    • Andrew Austin, Cael Newton, and Biaggio Frattarelli of Charlotte

    • Cory Cannan of Barron Collier

  • 20 wrestlers lost on the front side and then battled through the backside of their brackets - finishing with 5 matches.

  • The “Bad Seed:

    • How good was the Captain Archer seeded? Just two wrestlers that were not #1 seeds (and they were #2 seeds) won their bracket. Morvens Saint Jean of Ft Myers and Maximus Brady of Mariner are the only non-#1 seeds to win a title.

40th Annual Kiwanis Invitational at Hernando HS

  • Clay crowned 3 individual champs, but it was their wrestling on the backside and their 3 runners-up that really separated them from Winter Springs as they claimed the Kiwanis title.

2021 Danny Byron at Osceola HS - Day 1 - Day 2 - Live on Trackwrestling

Summary: Great opportunity to get in some very good wrestling right at the beginning of the season. The Danny Byron doesn’t keep team scores, but you can learn a great deal about some important pieces of each squad in an event like this where each wrestler will get a ton of matches. If last year was predictive of how wrestlers would do in the post-season and you can extend that to this year … then you want to keep an eye on those final matches (which featured State Champs and a ton of State Placers a year ago). This is a tournament where a wrestler can really make an impact.

Mako Invitational at Orange Beach

Teams Include:

  • Braddock
