What to Watch - Episode 1 - Schoolboy and Cadet Duals

USA Wrestling’s Schoolboy (14U) and Cadet (16U) Duals kick off later this week in Indiana. The Schoolboys are in Franklin and the Cadets will be in Westfield - if you happen to be in the neighborhood. I have worked to track down the SE teams that are scheduled to compete - to give you a preview of who to watch. Note: Not every state responded to the requests … so the info below is what I was able to find. Some are missing coach quotes. I’m also assuming North Carolina and South Carolina are not taking teams this year.

Where to Watch (or follow the dashboard)

I’d be surprised if the event is not streamed on trackwrestling - but know you will need a Gold+ subscription in order to watch it live.

14U Duals

Teams to Watch:

It is difficult to project the teams to watch in 2021 because of two important factors: 1) none of the duals happened in 2020 - so we are two years removed from the competition, and 2) the names and faces change year to year with kids moving for age group to age group. Many of the 14U’s were wrestling 12U the last time this event happened. Still we can look at the traditional powers to give us a sense of who might be the teams to watch in 2021.

Pennsylvania Blue downed Minnesota Red 47-30 to claim the 14U (Schoolboy) Greco title in 2019. Oklahoma Red, Washington, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana Gold, and Oklahoma Blue each made the Gold/Silver Pool.

Pennsylvania Blue also took home the Freestyle title with a 39-33 win over Oklahoma Blue. Minnesota Red, California, Ohio, New Jersey Red, Washington, and Illinois finished out the top 8.

Most of the wrestlers compete in both styles - so the PA Blue squad (which featured Bo Bassett, Mason Gibson, the Williams brothers, etc.) had most of their squad win in both styles.

Blue? Red? Gold? New to USA Wrestling’s Duals competition?

Blue, Red, Gold, or whatever is simply a way to designate different teams from the same state. Most states brought (or will bring) a single team to the event, but if you see a color designation after the state - you should know that the state has two teams in the competition.

How does the tournament work?

There are multiple steps to the final placement of teams …

Step 1: Teams are “seeded” into one of 4 pools to begin the competition.

Step 2: Each team advances through a bracket with wins (or is put into the consolations with a loss). Ordering teams 1 through 8 (typically it is 8, but it depends on how many teams are in the bracket) after Day 1 of competition.

Step 3: Day 2 the teams are placed into their “final” pool - in this competition there is a Gold/Silver Pool, a Bronze/Copper Pool and so on. If a team took 1st or 2nd in their bracket from Day 1 - they are placed in the Gold/Silver Pool. If they finished 3rd or 4th then the are placed in the Bronze/Copper Pool and so on.

Step 4: Each “pool” (a pool is a setup where each team wrestles every other team in that pool) has a Pool A and Pool B and every team in Pool A will wrestle every other team in Pool A (same with Pool B).

Step 5: The final match for each team is a “cross-over” between pools A and B in their larger Gold/Silver, etc. pool. That match determines a team’s final place.

NOTE: The Places out the side of a wrestler are their finish at SE Regions (GR = Greco Roman and FS = Freestyle).

  • 250 - None

The trip will still be very exciting … The goal of this trip is to get some of our newer kids exposure at the national scene. Winning isn't the focus for the new kids, but mat time and understanding of olympic styles and how it will help them when folkstyle season comes this fall. - Coach Williams

Who to Watch: Sykes, Holmes-Smith, Vines, Peeler, and Williams are the strength of the squad. Each has post-season folkstyle experience (state qualifiers or state placers as middle schoolers this past year) and it will be interesting to see how they fair against some of the top Schoolboys/Schoolgirls in the nation.

Florida

  • 71 - Everett Stephens (3rd FS; 3rd GR))

  • 77 - Uy`Kwon Wimberly

  • 83 - William Buckley (4th FS)

  • 87 - Lincoln Sledzianowski (8th FS)

  • 92 - Landon Quiroga

  • 97 - Tyler Gray

  • 102 - Johnathan Moder (4th GR; 4th FS)

  • 106 - Andres DiGrigoli (1st GR; 1st FS at 110)

  • 125 - Micah Wittenberg (1st FS)

  • 130 - Landen Holley

  • 136 - Gavin Isaacs

  • 136 - Kalias Nazario

  • 149 - Bryan Picallo

  • 165 - Michael Mocco (1st GR; 1st FS)

  • 187 - Alex Smith (1st FS)

  • 250 - None

Who to Watch: Another solid group from top to bottom. Mocco and DriGrigoli each won both styles at SE Regions and should lead the way for the boys from Florida. Micah Wittenberg and Alex Smith each claimed the title in Freestyle. The key to how well Florida fares later this week will likely fall to how well SE placers Stephens, Buckley, Moder, Kohn, and others wrestle.

Georgia

  • 71 - Teequavious Mills

  • 77 - Cooper McArthur (4th FS; 1st GR)

  • 83 - Gabe Swann (4th GR; 6th FS at 77)

  • 87 - Roman Belardo (3rd GR; 3rd FS)

  • 92 - James Sievers

  • 97 - Isaac Hoshide

  • 97 - Cash Prado

  • 102 - Nick Owens

  • 106 - Scott Swann

  • 110 - None

  • 114 - Phillip Jax (4th GR; 6th FS at 119)

  • 119 - Ronan An

  • 125 - David Jewell

  • 125 - Paul Lanier

  • 130 - Connor Stevens (8th FS)

  • 136 - Moose Bringer

  • 149 - Matt Vanwettering (3rd GR; 4th FS)

  • 165 - Kriecg Roe

  • 187 - Robert McCoy

  • 250 - None

It was an awesome experience to see the schoolboy team train for three days at our National Tram Camp. We have some good kids with National experience, so we expect to compete to be in the All-American rounds. - Coach Moistner

Who to Watch: Cooper McArthur, Roman Belardo, Phillip Jax, and Matt Vanwettering each placed top 4 at the SE Regions and should lead the way. Mills, Owens, An, Lanier, and Bringer didn’t wrestle in Jacksonville (as far as I can tell), but should be some names to watch this weekend. Georgia may not have any superstars (like the last time they brought a team to schoolboys), but they are solid from top to bottom and should be in the hunt.

Tennessee

  • 71 - Noah Watkins

  • 77 - Hudson Chittum (1st GR; 2nd FS at 71)

  • 83 - Jose Cordero (3rd GR; 2nd FS at 77)

  • 83 - Tanner Tran

  • 87 - Axle Ritchie

  • 92 - Kellan Sanders

  • 92 - Charles Phillips (4th GR; 6th FS at 87)

  • 97 - Nate Boger (1st GR; 1st FS)

  • 102 - Chase Walker (1st GR; 1st FS)

  • 102 - Zachary Little

  • 106 - Zac Bosken (3rd GR; 3rd FS)

  • 106 - Blake Cogden

  • 110 - Malachi Puckett

  • 110 - Findley Smout (3rd GR; 5th FS)

  • 114 - Kaden Rice (5th FS)

  • 119 - David Cook

  • 125 - Blaise Meeks

  • 136 - Eli Lane

  • 149 - Cy Fowler (2nd GR; 2nd FS)

  • 165 - Fred Casto

  • 187 - Xavier Vizacon

  • 250 - Amos Huan

  • Mattox High (do not have a weight for Mattox)

Who to Watch: From top to bottom - Tennessee might have the best team from the SE (but if any of the teams cross paths - we should get some good battles). Chase Walker won a stacked 102 lb. bracket (both styles) at SE Regions and is definitely one to keep an eye on. Nate Boger won both styles at 97 in Jacksonville and Hudson Chittum was in the finals at 71 (winning Greco and taking 2nd in freestyle - but is listed at 77 for the duals). Cy Fowler took 2nd at 149 (both styles) and should be another to watch for this weekend. Zac Bosken was 3rd in both styles at 106 in Jacksonville and Jose Cordero was 2nd in freestyle (and 3rd in Greco) at 77 (but like Chittum is listed to be up a weight for duals).

16U Duals

Teams to Watch:

Just like the Schoolboys - it is hard to know what will be the make-up of the Cadet teams this year. We can look at the schoolboy duals from 2 years ago and get a good idea of some of the wrestlers you might see at Cadets in 2021. If we take 2 years ago as the barometer … Pennsylvania has a team that few in the country can compete against. But Bassett has made a U15 World Team and don’t be surprised if the hammers from that squad (Mason Gibson, Williams x2, etc.) are gearing up for Fargo. Still the competition should be very steep - especially with everyone trying to get a ton of mat time. Oklahoma, Illinois, and Washington are always in the hunt and it would be surprise if 2021 was any different.

NOTE: The Places out the side of a wrestler are their finish at SE Regions (GR = Greco Roman and FS = Freestyle).

SE Teams

Alabama

  • 88 - Wallace Blue

  • 94 - None

  • 100 - Cale Tucker

  • 106 - Brodie Christmas (8th FS at 113)

  • 113 - William Anderson (4th GR at 120; 5th FS at 120)

  • 120 - Hudson Waldrop (3rd GR; 3rd FS)

  • 120 - Noah Smith

  • 126 - Chad Strickland (6th FS)

  • 126 - Nicolas Dempsey (4th GR)

  • 138 - Bryce Alli

  • 145 - Clay Johnston (3rd GR 152; 6th FS t 152)

  • 145 - Jacob Wheeler

  • 152 - Cole Sykes (4th GR)

  • 152 - Collin Burroughs

  • 160 - Kyle Oliveira

  • 170 - Logan Ransom

  • 182 - William Conlon (2nd GR; 4th FS)

  • 182 - Ian Osbourn

  • 195 - William Caneer

  • 220 - Mason Ellis

  • 285 - Willie Cox (4th GR; 4th FS)

The coaches are very excited with this squad and what we have to work with. We have a good mix of very experienced kids and lesser experienced kids. Several members of the team have past national duals experience and the ability to bring 20 kids to compete is going to be huge in our ability to be competitive. - Team Leader Dave Johnston

Who to Watch: The Alabama Cadet Team should be very tough from 100 through 126. Tucker, Christmas, Anderson, Waldrop, Strickland, and Dempsey all have national experience … add in Noah Smith and the team has some flexibility to create some matchups. Alabama also has some tough wrestlers “up top” with Johnston, Sykes, Conlon, and Cox. This is probably the best Cadet team Alabama has put together for the duals … the competition will be tough, but this team should be in the hunt.

Florida

  • 88 - None

  • 94 - Derrick Williams

  • 100 - Fredrick Mitchum

  • 106 - Christian Fretwell

  • 113 - Ethan Vugman (4th GR)

  • 120 - Anderson Heap (1st GR; 2nd FS)

  • 126 - Elvis Solis

  • 132 - Reid Noble

  • 132 - Gavin Balmaceda (6th FS)

  • 138 - Brandon Cody (1st GR; 8th FS)

  • 145 - Gianni Maldonado

  • 152 - Kendrick Hodge (3rd FS)

  • 160 - Cordell White Jr

  • 170 - Brian Burburija (2nd GR; 1st FS)

  • 182 - Connor Hackett (3rd GR; 6th FS)

  • 195 - Sawyer Bartelt

  • 220 - Branden Marrero

  • 285 - Caleb Rodriguez (2nd GR; 1st FS)

Who to Watch: Florida will be tough in spots throughout the lineup. Heap and Burburija each won a style and took 2nd in the other style at SE Regions. Vugman, Balmaceda, Cody, Hodge, Hacket, and Rodriguez also made the podium in at least one of the two styles. The best wrestler of the group is Sawyer Bartelt who didn’t compete at SE Regions, but is a legit threat to claim a stop sign in Fargo. Fretwell, Solis, Noble, Maldonado, and White had good folkstyle seasons … how will that translate to Greco and Freestyle? Florida should be in the hunt … it will be interesting to see if they can take care of business on day one and advance to the Gold/Silver pool for Day 2.

Georgia

* Georgia will be bringing two squads for both Greco and Freestyle (a Blue and Red team). Both are listed below. A wrestler will compete in both styles for their squad unless otherwise noted.

Georgia (Blue)

  • 88 - Eli Bowman

  • 94 - Ty Murray

  • 100 - Antonio Mills (1st GR at 94; 4th GR at 100; 1st FS at 94)

  • 106 - Kieron McCormack

  • 113 - Drew Gorman (1st GR; 1st FS)

  • 120 - Noah Danforth

  • 126 - Logan Paradice

  • 132 - Cade Parent (2nd GR)

  • 138 - Josh Denson

  • 145 - Emil Necula (GR)

  • 145 - Latrell Scaffer

  • 152 - Dominic Bambinelli (4th GR 145; 3rd FS at 145)

  • 160 - Creed Thomas

  • 160 - Tyler Secoy

  • 170 - Hoke Poe-Hogan (1st GR; 3rd FS)

  • 182 - Omaury Alvarez

  • 195 - None

  • 220 - Tre Butler (GR)

  • 220 - Ivan Thurman (FS)

  • 285 - Hayden Roy

Georgia Red

  • 88 - None

  • 94 - None

  • 100 - Cael Kusky

  • 106 - Brayden Mitchell

  • 113 - Jonathan McDaniel

  • 120 - Maddox McArthur

  • 126 - Collin Mullins (2nd GR; 3rd FS)

  • 126 - Gunner Chambers (3rd GR; 4th FS)

  • 132 - Jackson Mills (8th FS)

  • 138 - Jace Parent

  • 145 - Jason Clark (6th FS)

  • 145 - Emil Necula (FS)

  • 152 - Micah Wood

  • 152 - Zach Wallace

  • 170 - Brock Hacker

  • 182 - None

  • 195 - None

  • 220 - Gatlin Sugarman (GR)

  • 220 - Tre Butler (FS) (3rd FS)

  • 285 - Ivan Thurman (GR)

  • 285 - Gatlin Sugarman (FS)

We have two goals. First, to compete for a national title. This team has some individuals that will be hunting for stop signs in Fargo … they should expect to be in the hunt for a national title as a team. Second, we are building to Fargo. Understanding how to handle 7 or 8 matches in a day to get to the bloodround or a medal round match. The duals give you the best opportunity to replicate that. - Coach Davis

What to Watch: Coach Davis hit the nail on the head with his comment … the expectations are high for the Georgia Cadets. This is a team that should be competitive at every weight and will be favored at many of the weight classes. Emil Necula nearly made a U15 World Team a few months ago, but the wrestler to watch is Drew Gorman. Gorman is a monster at 113. Add in Alvarez, Hogan, Bambinelli, Danforth, Mills, and others … Georgia Blue will be a tough team to beat. Georgia Red also features several very good wrestlers, but with 4 forfeits - the battle will be uphill. Keep an eye on Mullins and Chambers - both wrestled well at SE regions and should help lead Georgia Red in both styles.

Tennessee

  • 88 - None

  • 94 - None

  • 100 - Mason Jacob (2nd FS)

  • 106 - Cooper Hilton

  • 113 - Jarvis Little

  • 120 - Casen Roark (1st FS)

  • 126 - Hunter Sturgill (1st GR; 2nd FS)

  • 132 - Landon Deselle

  • 138 - Connor Payne (6th FS at 132)

  • 145 - James Strong

  • 152 - Clark Vaughn

  • 160 - Kaiden Bates (8th FS)

  • 170 - ?

  • 182 - Landon Williams

  • 195 - Hayven Jenkins

  • 220 - Miles Workman

  • 285 - Dion Stutts

What to Watch: The top wrestler on any SE team (and perhaps on any team at the event) is 15U World Team Member Cooper Hilton. Hilton made Team USA in both Greco and Freestyle at 44 kg (about 10 lbs lighter than he will wrestle at the duals). Regardless all 106’s should be on notice. The Tennessee Cadets are very tough from Mason Jacob (100) through Connor Payne (132) … but with at least 2 forfeits - the team (in terms of dual wins) could struggle. Hilton, Roark, Sturgill, and Deselle can go with anyone, but it takes more than 4 to win a dual. How far Team Tennessee climbs will be up to how well the 145-285 group performs.

In Summary …

The duals are a great way to see top competition and learn (especially for the newer wrestlers) how to handle 8 matches in one style and then switch it up and wrestle 8 in another style. Over the years - the Duals have been a good gauge on who is ready to perform well in Fargo and who needs to put in some extra work in the month between.

You should see …

  • SE teams be very competitive, but any forfeits could push a team into a lower placing pool

  • Several wrestlers will go unbeaten (in one or both styles)

  • Several wrestlers will struggle with the level of competition … but will they win the matches they “should” win.

Five on the Rise

Remember this is focused solely on the Greco portion of the weekend. I didn’t get to watch the matches live (I was working on Friday), but have gone back and watched the majority of them through FloWrestling. These are the 5 that stood out to me. Remember these are all kids from the SE - might have been really impressed by a kid from somewhere else in the country, but they won’t make this list.

Juniors

  • Christian Guzman (FL) - Guzman is another wrestler that looked outstanding in the Greco bracket … 113 wasn’t very deep, but Terrell, Gehr, etc. are tough and Guzman cruised - not yielding a point.

  • Hunter Mason (TN) - Mason was simply the best on the mat in the deepest weight of the tournament. You could make the argument that Singleton was the best overall and the Junior World Team Member was simply outstanding - no doubt. But Mason’s level of competition was outstanding and he hammered the competition (beating Reese Jones, Dylan Layton, and Hayden Whidden).

  • Matthew Singleton (GA) - putting Singleton here seems questionable, but only because he is already at the top (Junior World Team Member). But his run through the bracket was impressive none the less. His 5 early in the tournament was plain nasty.

  • Devin Stone (AL) - Stone was the only one of the five listed that did not win his weight. He fell to Alex Almeyda in the finals at 138. But Stone was impressive in a tough weight class. He had 3 falls (and some nice 4 pointers) before losing to Almeyda.

  • Tyler Washburn (FL) - Washburn was already a superb wrestler, but the ability to work with Varona, Ison, and the Garage Boyz room seems to be really paying dividends - especially on the Greco side. 106 wasn’t particularly tough or deep, but Washburn was far and away the best in the weight. It will be interesting to see how he fairs in Fargo or Oklahoma later this summer.

Several other wrestlers stood out as well. Alabama’s Yanni Vines downed Dominic Ditomasso 16-8 and Darrell Rochester 2-1 to claim the 120 title. Florida’s Cooper Haase looked great at 126 beating Oren Decker of Georgia in the finals. Reese Jones, Dylan Layton, and Hayden Whidden wrestled well, but were in the same weight as Mason. Carson Miller (who I thought was from Florida- but it says Virginia) beat Sam Harris 7-6 in the 145 lb. finals. Miller also beat Latona 6-5 in the semis.

Tennessee’s Garrett Foreman won 152, but had to work for it. Downing Marc Kelyman 9-8 and Oliver Howard of Alabama 5-4. Florida’s Alex Couto took the 160 lb. title and won a tough 5-4 semi over Alabama’s Jakob Chisolm. Tennessee’s Bowers made the finals opposite Singleton at 170 and Georgia’s Will Parker made the finals at 182. Florida’s Tal Shahar was simply outstanding and could have been one of the 5 above - he dominated the 195 lb. bracket. Alabama’s Zogg was 2nd at 285.

Cadets (16U)

  • Brandon Cody (FL) - Cody wrestled superb on his way to the 138 lb title. He beat Yannis Charles 13-2, Saenz 10-0, Sanchez 10-0, and then downed Cade Parent of Georgia 6-0 in the finals.

  • Anderson Heap (FL) - Heap had a good run through the 120 lb. bracket … he downed Noah Smith of Alabama 14-3, Luis Acevedo 12-0 before pinning Hudson Waldrop in the semis. A 10-4 win over RI’s Hayden Myers capped off his day.

  • Hoke Poe Hogan (GA) - Really good day for Poe-Hogan. He beat Harvey Ludington of New Jersey 6-5 in an opening round thriller and downed Florida’s Brian Burburija 6-2 in the 170 lb. finals.

  • Ethan Mojena (FL) - Mojena took care of business in a very tough 145 lb. bracket. His 4-3 finals match over Duncan Christensen is the type of match you have to win make the podium in Fargo.

  • Hunter Sturgill (TN) - Sturgill claimed the 126 lb. title with 3 consecutive superior decisions without yielding a point before downing Georgia’s Collin Mullins 11-7 in the finals.

Many other Cadets had outstanding tournaments as well and some just missed the top 5 mentioned above. Drew Gorman won one of the deepest weights at 113. He beat Donny Almeyda 6-5 in the opening round before taking out Brodie Christmas and Luke Lilledahl. An outstanding day for Gorman (and just one of a handful to take titles in both styles). Georgia’s Collin Mullins had a nice run through the bottom side of the 126 lb. bracket before falling to Sturgill in the 126 lb. final. Georgia’s Cade Parent looked good on the top side of the 138 lb. bracket before losing in the finals to Cody.

Christopher Sanchez, Clay Johnston, and Cole Sykes each made the podium at 152. Roman Garcia downed fellow Floridian Omer Barak to claim the 160 lb. title. Burburija was 2nd at 170 and Alabama’s Will Conlon was 2nd at 182. Nicolas Jenkins took the title at 195 and Florida’s Jonathan Fraga claimed the title at 220.

Schoolboys (14U)

  • Hudson Chittum (TN) - Chittum rolled in 2 matches and then had some work to do in 2 others. His 5-1 win over Everett Stephens to begin the day and his 5-4 win over Caleb Noble to end the day were nice bookend wins to take the title at 71 lbs.

  • Cooper McArthur (GA) - 77 lbs. was a good weight from top to bottom and McArthur handled things easily. He had a fall before downing Holton Quincey and Drew Dawson with superior decisions.

  • Michael Mocco (FL) - I picked Mocco as one of the top 5 because of his ability to grind out two wins after losing his first match to DJ Wilson. Mocco lost 9-5, but bounced back to down Wilson 4-3 and 9-5 and win the 165 lb. title.

  • Blue Stiffler (SC) - Stiffler was unchallenged at 136 - he spent just a minute on the mat in claiming the 136 lb. title.

  • Chase Walker (TN) - Walker won a very good 102 lb. weight class. He beat Stone Phillips 13-10 in the opening round (Phillips came back to take 3rd) and then beat Florida’s Nikolas Gray 10-0 before downing Alabama’s Kiowa Vines 5-1 to take the title. Really good wrestling in a very good weight.

A few others names popped up as I was watching the Greco Schoolboys do work. Keep an eye on 71 lber Everett Stephens of Florida - took 3rd, but wrestled tough. Already mentioned that 77 was a tough weight - McArthur won, but Cordero was 3rd and avenged his only loss in the consi finals - beating Chris Swann. Florida’s William Buckley won 83 and Adaias Ortiz was 3rd at 92. Nathaniel Boger of Tennessee was a double champ - taking the Greco title at 97 - had to eek out a 7-6 win over Taj Jones of Georgia earlier in the tournament.

Alabama’s Kiowa Vines was 2nd and Stone Phillips 3rd in a tough 102 lb. bracket. Zeno Moore lost a close one to Gabriel Logan for the 106 lb. title - Zac Bosken was 3rd at the weight. Andres Dirrigoli of Florida took home the 110 lb. title and Bradley Williams of Alabama was 2nd at 114. Tennessee’s Cy Fowler finished 2nd at 149 and Florida’s Erniet Perez claimed the 187 lb. title.

The Breakdown - Episode 1

In today’s episode - we breakdown some of the weekend in Jacksonville. Specifically looking at Freestyle for USA Wrestling’s Southeast Regionals. The plan is to do a follow-up episode focusing on Greco and then Spartan Nationals, but for now we focus on Freestyle for the SE Regions at the 14U, 16U, and Junior levels. Congrats if you won 10U or Masters, but that isn’t the focus on the website … so you won’t find any coverage of those age groups. You can, however, find all of the results from the individual part of the weekend (there were also duals, but again that won’t be covered in this episode) in FloArena.

Pics are now available. You can find all of them on the smugmug site. Visit the pics page of SEWrestle for an explanation of the pics and a link to all of the galleries.

5 on the Rise

Wrestlers from all over descended on Jacksonville for 4-days of awesome wrestling … from the beach to the Prime Osborn convention center. These are 5 (in each of the divisions above) that stood out to me. As always it is important to know - there were more than 20 mat going on simultaneously so it is very possible I missed someone (and I haven’t had a chance to go back and watch all of the matches of FloWrestling).

Last note: these are all for Freestyle and all are from the SE. It was great to see Henry Porter of California and Nick Sanko of New York compete, but this is focused on SE wrestlers. Wrestlers are listed in alphabetical order by division:

Junior Boys

  • Brayden Ivy (TN) - Ivy won 5 in a row to claim the 138 lb. title. He outscored his opponents 44-0 heading into the finals … where he got an exceptionally good Alex Almeyda of New Jersey. Back and forth match with Ivy coming out on top in a what seemed like a controversial passivity call. The official was right on the call, but it is hard to see it happening twice in under 10 seconds.

  • Hunter Mason (TN) - Mason is on another level right now. He took the toughest bracket in Juniors (probably the toughest bracket in the tournament) and dominated. He beat Hayden Whidden 11-1 in the quarters, Sean Mciahel-Gonzalez 132 in the semis and then downed Eligh Rivera 10-0 on a leg lace that ended the match after just a minute in.

  • Joe Sealey (NC) - If Mason wasn’t the OW in Junior Boys - then that would have gone to Joe Sealey. Sealey won both Cadets and Juniors and wasn’t really challenged all weekend - even wrestling up in the JR division. If there is one wrestler I’d bet will walk away with a stop sign in Fargo - it would be Sealey. Go watch Sealey’s early round match vs. Andrew Troczynski (NJ) to get an appreciation for how good Sealey is in certain positions.

  • Michael Tal Shahar (FL) - Tal Shahar looks like his “old” self after battling through an injury (?) over the last year or so. He had a nice battle with Illinois’s Deanthony Parker in the semis - winning 7-4, but very much looked the part of a returning Fargo All American.

  • Yanni Vines (AL) - Vines takes the quintessential “workmanlike” approach to every match. He isn’t flashy with 5 point throws (although I’m sure he has that in his toolkit - he did have a 5 vs. Kevin Placer, but I didn’t see it), but is simply nearly always in the best position to score or counter. Watch his matches … it is 2 takedown, 2 takedown, gut, and so on.

The Junior Boys had some outstanding brackets so there are other names that deserve to be mentioned. They may not have climbed to the top of the podium, but they look ready for a summer of wrestling in the duals and in Fargo.

Florida’s Christan Guzman was 2nd at 113 - he lost to Lillendahl 10-8 on points and had a nice 18-8 superior decision over TN hammer Bryson Terrell. Both Darrell Rochester and Dominic Ditomasso had good weekends. Both lost to Vines, but I was really impressed with Rochester’s 9-2 win over Drew Heethuis and Dtomasso’s 13-2 “tech” over Jeremiah Echevarria of California in the consi finals.

126 was a great weight and former Florida hammer Kai Owen dominated - beating everyone with a superior decision including Cooper Haase and Amantee Mills. 132 was the best weight in JRs and I’ve already mentioned Mason above - but take a look at the top 8. Several outstanding performances by the SE including Whidden, Layton, Rivera, and so on. Florida’s Nini was 3rd losing a close semi to Alex Almeyda of New Jersey. Alabama’s James Latona finished the freestyle portion 5-2 and in 4th at 145 … Latona won 5 in a row after losing his opening round match to Oklahoma’s Cutter Sheets.

Alabama’s Jakob Chisolm had a nice run at 160. He lost to eventual runner-up Gaetano Console of Illinois in the semis before finishing 4th. 170 was a really good weight, but simply dominated by Georgia’s Matty Singleton. Georgia’s Armond Jones finished 3rd at 182 and was 5-1 in freestyle. Tennessee’s Thomas Stadel continues to impress - finishing 4th at 195 with his only losses coming to Tal Shahar and Deanthony Parker of Illinois.

Cadet (16U Boys)

  • Brian Burburija (FL) - Florida’s Burburija won a really good weight and had to work to get the title. He downed Jared Schoppe of New Jerrsey 10-8 in the semis and then another New Jersey hammer in Harvey Ludington 8-5 in the finals.

  • Drew Gorman (GA) - If Sealey isn’t the OW on this list, then Gorman is. He started things with an outstanding 10-5 win over NC’s Jax Forrest before downing Alabama Champ Brodie Christmas, New Jersey’s Donny Alymeda, and finally Oklahoma’s Gage Walker in the finals. From top to bottom - those 5 wins might be better than anyone else’s 5 wins this weekend.

  • Ethan Rivera (FL) - Rivera beat fellow Floridian Gabriel Tellez in the finals, but it was his 3-1 decision over Noah Nininger in the semis that is the match the watch. If Rivera can beat the likes of Nininger - he has to be one of the favorites in Fargo.

  • Casen Roark (TN) - Roark is one to watch come July. His wins over Hudson Waldrop (13-6 in the semis) and 12-0 over Anderson Heap in the finals - show where Roark stands in terms of being ready to medal in Fargo.

  • Joe Sealey (NC) - Sealey pulled double duty this weekend and dominated both the Cadets and Juniors. He won Cadets with 4 10-0 superior decisions. Sealey is on another level.

The 5 above really had outstanding tournaments, but don’t forget about these names … each wrestled extremely well. I can’t wait to see Georgia’s Antonio Mills get some competition. He looks lights out at 94 lbs., but we haven’t seen him wrestle against the top 94ers around … don’t be surprised to see Mills on the Fargo podium. Both Gabriel Tellez and Allen Calderon had nice tournaments at 106 - both are behind the top tier of Rivera and Nininger, but love the way they compete.

North Carolina’s Jax Forrest bounced back from an opening round loss to Georgia’s Drew Gorman to take 3rd at 113. Forrest win 6 in a row including wins over Brodie Christmas, Raymond Adams, and Christian Davis. Florida’s Anderson Heap and Alabama’s Hudson Waldrop both had good tournaments, but each dropped a match - to Casen Roark at 120. Still 120 was a very good weight and the two finished 2nd and 3rd respectively behind Roark. 126 was another exceptional weight in Cadets and Tennessee’s Hunter Sturgill led the way for the SE. Sturgill ha 4 consecutive 10-0 superior wins on his way to the finals - before losing 6-1 to NY’s Nick La Morte.

Florida’s Caleb Negron finished 2nd at 132. He had a nice 6-3 win over Gavin Balmeceda in the semis before dropping a close one to Casper Stewart of New York 3-1 in the finals. South Carolina’s Yannis Charles had a nice run at 138 - making the semis beofre losing to Jacob Schmadeke of Arizona. Florida’s Ethan Mojena had a great run at 145 … claiming the title with a hard fought 2-1 win over Connecticut’s William Henckel in the finals. The SE is well represented at 145 with Mojena and Dominic Bambinelli of Georgia (who finished 3rd).

Florida’s Kendrick Hodge and Chris Sanchez both had good tournaments to finish top 4 at 152. Florida also had a pair in Eli Penton and Roman Garcia that finished 2nd and 3rd at 160 - in fact Penton was leading Bell when he gave up the fall in the finals. Loved the grit from Georgia’s Hoke Poe-Hogan … he lost in the opening round at 170, but then won 4 in a row - including avenging his earlier loss to Schoppe 16-14 to take 3rd. We’ve got another Matthew Waddell in Georgia … Waddell finished 3rd at 182 after losing 15-8 to eventual champ Kingsley Menifee in the semis. Alabama’s Cole Carter was 2nd at 195 and Florida’s Jonathan Fraga was 2nd at 220. Florida’s Caleb Rodriguez took home the 285 lb. title with a fall of Cane Fernandez in the finals.

  • Nathaniel Boger (TN) - Just 5 wrestlers in the 97 lb. bracket, but the action was excellent. Boger beat Davis 8-5 to claim the title, but it was all of his matches that puts him on this list. Love the way he kept battling through the positions to score.

  • Andres Digrigoli (FL) - Digrigoli had to dig deep to get a couple of wins to claim the 110 title. His matches vs. David Perez and Nathan Barrett were outstanding to watch.

  • Zeno Moore (FL) - Moore dominated early in the tournament with 3 superior decisions (outscoring his opponents 34-0), but man in was the finals that was just great to watch. If you have a FloWrestling subscription - you can watch it here. A bit of controversy here at the end.

  • Shamus Regan (NC) - Regan dominated his first 3 matches before being pushed in the finals by Jose Cordero. I went back to watch this match because I didn’t see it live. Watch out for both of these kids in the future.

  • Chase Walker (TN) - Walker won a really good and exciting weight. He easily handled Hastings, Koonce, and Moder to reach the finals, but the 14-10 win over Stone Phillips was the one you need to go back and watch.

Don’t know the Schoolboys nearly as well as the Juniors or Cadets, but here is what stood out to me as I was able to catch some of the action … 92 through 114 were some tough weights and were very competitive. The SE took the top 4 weights with Georgia’s Blue Stiffler and Florida’s Marrion Nelson, Michael Mocco, and Alexander Smith each claiming titles. Tennessee’s Hudson Chittum dropped his finals match to Caleb Noble 10-6 at 71 lbs. Tennessee’s Jose Cordero was 2nd at 77 to Regan of North Carolina.

Florida’s Adaias Ortiz was 2nd at 92 lbs losing to a very tough Gus Cardinal 12-2 in the finals. Liam Davis of Florida lost to Boger of Tennessee 8-5 in the finals at 97. 102 was a really good weight that featured 4 SE hammers on top of the podium - Walker in 1st, Stone Phillips and Kiowa Vines of Alabama in 2nd and 3rd, and Johnathan Moder of Florida in 4th. Walker’s 14-10 win over Phillips in the finals is one to watch. Zeno Moore and Gabriel Logan battled to 8-8 in the 106 finals with Moore coming out on top with the criteria. Zac Bosken of Tennessee was 3rd and Kye Karcher of Florida was 4th in a really good weight.

Florida’s Nathan Barrett made his match with Drigoli close, but couldn’t get the W and finished 3rd at 110. Those of you from Alabama - watching Bradley Williams finish 4th at 114 is a great illustration of how tough 114 was. He lost 10-6 to eventual runner-up Leischer of Arizona and then dropped his consi final 10-7 to Jones of New Jersey. Williams is a legit threat for a state title next year in Alabama - so you can see how deep 114 was. Florida’s Wittenberg was simply dominant in taking the 125 title.

Girls

I have combined all of the girls into one section for 5 on the rise. The most disappointing thing were the size of the brackets for the girls. Georgia and Florida had huge state tournament brackets, but that didn’t translate into them showing up at SE Regions. Not the fault of the girls that were here and competing, but I expected more in terms of numbers.

  • Emma Bacon (FL) - Bacon won her bracket in the Schoolgirl division (92) and popped over to the Schoolboys and finished 4th at 87 lbs.

  • Hannah Hall (FL) - Hall did what she does … she looked good in the limited action she had - beating Brielle Bibla 13-5, Cooper Galvin 13-2, and Regan Riddick 10-0

  • April Kelly (SC) - Kelly makes the top 5 after battling (and beating) Madisyn Blackburn 10-8 in a great match in the Junior 132 bracket.

  • Kyla Oliver (FL) - Oliver dominated the schoolgirl division at 119 - would have been interesting to see her at Cadets vs. Regan Riddick at 122.

  • Valarie Solorio (FL) - Solorio was a 2 division champ - claiming the Cadet 106 title with a pair of superior decisions and then took the Junior 106 title in equally dominating fashion with 3 superior decisions and an 18 second fall. Look out for Solorio in Fargo.
