National Collegiate Duals Preview - Red Pool "B"

Journeymen Wrestling has brought together quite a field for this year’s version of the National Collegiate Duals - which will take place Dec 20-21 in the panhandle of Florida. We are going to take a quick look at the field in 4 different stories over the course of this week. The teams are broken down into two pools and then within each pool 3 teams in a group each. The pools will not have a crossover - which means no Penn State vs. Iowa matchup, but that isn’t surprising given that the two teams will have their dual in January. This is an unbelievable opportunity to watch some of the best college wrestlers in the nation compete over 2 days.

The Schedule:

How to Watch:

There are two ways to watch the event. First, if you are close - you can get tickets at Journeymen. Monday is going to be a banger with 12 duals featuring many of the best teams in the country. Day 2 (Tuesday) will be a crossover within the pools - so if Penn State wins the Blue Pool “A” and Arizona State wins the Blue Pool “B” then that will be the final on Tuesday evening. Can’t make it to northwest Florida? You can also watch it live on Rokfin. Simply click the picture above.

What to Watch Day 1 - Red Pool “A”:

Little shifting by some programs this week as we get closer to the matches on Monday. Looks like Lee will be there (and probably split some matches with Jesse Ybarra at 125). Doesn’t look like Kemerer will be there and will once again be replaced by Nelson Brands. We in the SE are hoping to watch Malyke Hines wrestle (he is an Osceola grad), but he may be replaced by Sheldon Seymour. This is completely expected as teams battle through the season. Still this should be a fun set of duals to watch. In all my years of watching wrestling I’ve never seen Iowa compete in a dual (I’ve seen them countless times at NCAA’s and other places in a tournament setting, but never as a dual team).

The 5 matches within this pool I am interested in watching:

  • Malyke Hines (Lehigh) vs. Austin Desanto (Iowa)

    • If, and it is a big if, we get Hines back in the lineup then this is the match I want to see. Desanto likes to push people all over the mat and really bully them into bad positions (and then he takes advantage) … can Hines use his speed and smarts to stay with Desanto?

  • The 157’s: Lovett, Humphreys, and Young

    • Outstanding weight for these duals. Johnny Lovett is another former Florida hammer doing an outstanding job up north for the Chippewas. He is exciting to watch and it will be fun to see him take on both Humphreys and Young.

  • The 285’s: Wood, Stencel, and Cassioppi

    • All three are ranked high enough to really make a run at the podium in March and each has a plethora of experience. Not sure if any of the duals come down to their matches, but these big boys will bring it.

  • Dresden Simon (Central Michigan) vs. ?

    • Not sure we will see Eierman. But that would be fun. Whoever Iowa puts out there will be a battle. I don’t know much about McConagle, but if he works with Hines, Seymour, and Bryant … I expect he will be fun to watch. But I’m really here to watch Dresden Simon. Simon is a Michigan native and 2x NCAA Qualifier that has been close to making the podium, but hasn’t quite been able to breakthrough.

  • Jaret Lane (Lehigh) vs. Spencer Lee or Jesse Ybarra (Iowa)

    • This is the match I’m most interested to see at 125 … will we see the Hodge Trophy winner or will they go with Ybarra here? Lane is a Senior (well given the extra year - not sure, but you get my meaning) and has been around the block … knows his stuff and will be a dangerous draw at NCAA’s in March.

SE Connections:

  • Brock Herring (Lehigh) from Tennessee

  • Malyke Hines (Lehigh) from Florida

  • Matt Rodriguez (Lehigh) from Florida

  • Paul Watkins (Lehigh) from Georgia

  • Chandler Amaker (Central Michigan) from South Carolina

  • Trey Bates (Central Michigan) from Tennessee

  • Johnny Lovett (Central Michigan) from Florida

  • Bretli Reyna (Iowa) from Florida

Don’t think we will see any of those SE hammers in the lineup except Lovett, but it would be awesome.

National Collegiate Duals Preview - Red Pool "A"

Had an opportunity to talk with Coach Frank Popilizio of Journeymen Wrestling for some back ground on the event … check it out (same interview highlighted elsewhere on the website - so if you’ve listened once …)

What to Watch Day 1 - Red Pool “A”:

NC State, Missouri, and Binghamton kick things off in the morning for the Red Pool. Both NC State and Missouri are ranked in the top 10 and that dual should be outstanding. Binghampton has 4 ranked wrestlers including Louie DePrez at 195 who is #12 by Intermat … they will push both Missouri and NC State for the top spot in this pool. Remember these are not exact line-ups - simply projections based on rankings (and previous duals). If these are the lineups then these are …

The 5 matches within this pool I am interested in watching:

  • Keegan O’Toole (Missouri) vs. Thomas Bullard (NC State)

    • Of course we start with a former SE hammer as one to watch. Bullard was a standout at Archer (Georgia) many moons ago and has been a regular at the NCAA tournament for years. O’Toole might be one of the most exciting wrestlers you will ever watch. Who dictates their match - it will be fun to watch this chess match unfold.

  • The 285’s: Trephan, Doyle, and Elam

    • All 3 are ranked with Zach Elam coming in with the highest ranking of the three. Trephan beat Wilson in the room and now looks like he will hold onto the spot. This weight class (as well as 197) could be the two that define some very close duals … don’t sleep on the big boys.

  • Peyton Mocco (Missouri) vs. Hayden Hidlay (NC State)

    • Hidlay has the credentials after coming up just short of an NCAA title several times. Mocco has looked superb this season and looks headed to spot on the podium in March. This one will be great.

  • Louie DePrez (Binghampton) vs. Isaac Trumble (NC State)

  • Jarrett Jacques (Missouri) vs. Ed Scott (NC State)

SE Connections:

  • Donald Cates (NC State) from North Carolina

  • Alex Faison (NC State) from North Carolina

  • Tyrie Houghton (NC State) from North Carolina

  • James Joplin (NC State) from North Carolina

  • Christian Knop (NC State) from Alabama

  • Owen Trephan (NC State) from South Carolina

  • Thomas Bullard (NC State) from Georgia

  • Alex Uriquiza (NC State) from Florida

What to Know from the Weekend of Dec 11-12

Here is a glimpse into some of the information that is in SEWrestle+. Each week we try to gather a bunch of the individual accomplishments from the weekend and post it as a “What to Know from the Weekend”. Below is this week’s What to Know for everyone …

If you are interested in the team scores or the individual champs please visit the Breakdown. This is focused on wrestlers that stood out - whether they won their weight or not … so wrestlers that fought back through to get 3rd, wrestlers that got falls (bonus points are important), those that earned the most team points, and most importantly those that proved they were the “Bad Seed” in a tournament - meaning they were not seeded very high, but found a way to beat those seeded above them to either claim a title or make the podium.

Alabama

2021 Swede Umbach Invite at Auburn - Live on TrackWrestling

  • Hewitt-Trussville looked sharp this weekend in claiming the Swede Umbach title over Lee County (GA), Lambert (GA), and others.

  • Gardendale’s Melton Powe led all wrestlers with 32 team points - he was followed by Yanik Simon of Huntsville, Kennedy Wyatt of Gardendale, and his younger brother Daishon Powe of Gardendale who each had 30.

  • Tyler Johnston of Smiths Station, Weston Bryan of Lee County, Melton Powe of Gardendale, and Kyle Fontenot of Smiths Station were bonus point monsters after tallying 5 falls.

  • Smiths Station’s Steven Flagg was the ultimate “bad seed” - coming in seeded #8 and taking the 285 lb. title. It was quite a run with wins over Georgia 7A State Runner-up Thomas Dossett and Alabama 7A ranked wrestlers Desmond Nesbitt and Maddox Sunderman.

  • Other “Bad Seeds” that came from an unseeded spot (not in the top 8) to make the podium include:

    • Weston Bryan, Karol Olalde, Drake McMinn, and Justin Gregory of Lee County

    • Avaneesh Subramaniam, Elijah Castillo, Camren May and Max Sciro of Lambert

    • Maddox Sunderman of Bob Jones

Mako Invitational at Orange Beach

  • Elberta claimed the team title (this might have been their first ever tournament title as I can’t think of another in the last several years)

  • Zeke Dernlan is a hammer at 106 and dominated the bracket with 3 1st period falls

  • Kenneth Thomas and Tristan Ferrera had the most falls of the day with 4

  • Ferrera had the most team points with 26 followed closely by Elberta teammate Dylan Maddux

  • Gage Pugh of Saraland was seeded 5th and ended up with the 132 lb. title.

  • Top point-earners:

    • Allen Baker of Mountain Brook led everyone with 32 points (Gray Ortis and Will Robinson were 2nd with 30).

    • Caleb Roe earned 30 for Arab, Cory Land had 30 for Moody, and Jack McMurry had 30 for Vestavia.

  • Ironman - Riley Lollar of Tuscaloosa County wrestled 8 matches - more than anyone else.

  • The “Bad Seed” -

    • Jack McMurry of Vestavia, Zak Vosburgh of Ft Walton Beach, and Allen Baker of Mountain Brook were not seeded in the top 4, but ended up claiming a title.

    • Riley Lollar of Tuscloosa County, Carter Tobik of Ft Walton Beach, Barron Criddle of Thompson, and Michael Howell of Oxford were not seeded and finished top 4.

Gene Taylor Memorial at Weaver

  • Weaver held off Ashville, Piedmont, Clburne County, and St James to claim the Gene Taylor Title.

  • Most Team points earned:

    • Jack Voneschembach and Victor Malone of St John Paul II, Dalton Fink, Joshua Johannson, and Devin Anderson of Weaver, Carson Hall of Ranburne and Jose Calderon of Susan Moore each led the way with 28 points.

  • It was falls galore as 19 wrestlers had 4 falls on the day. Victor Malone did it in the shortest amount of time 4 falls in 2:18 (4 seconds ahead of Brayden Morgan of Piedmont).

  • Many Ironmen in the group … 14 wrestlers wrestled 6 matches.

  • The “Bad Seed” -

    • Layden Olson of Ashville, Baron House of Pleasant Valley, and Camden Hamric were not seeded in the top 4 at their weight, but each battled through and claimed the top spot on the podium.

      • Olson downed the top seed Russell Clanton 3-2 in the quarters before pinning Owen Penney and taking out #2 seed Brody Lauderdale 6-5 in the finals at 220.

      • Hamric was seeded 5th - beat the #4 seed Torres by fall, the #1 seed Logan Hartson 8-0 and pinned the 3 seed Chase Jenkins to clima the 126 lb. title.

      • House downed #2 seed Izak Duke 10-9 in the quarters, the #3 seed Mason Hahm 4-3 in the semis and pinned the #5 seed Kasin Bramlett to take the 120 lb. title.

Florida

3rd Annual Rumble at the Ranch at Wiregrass Ranch HS (Girls)

2021 Santaluces Holiday Tournament

  • David Corret Jer, Ryan Ullyak, and Jake Maffi led the way as Palm Beach Gardens held off Cooper City and William T Dwyer for the team title.

  • Ullyak is joined by Omer Barak of AHDB, Alexavier Wright of Atlantic, William Kleine of Monarch, and Jared Millan of Clewiston as the top point-earners.

  • 8 wrestlers tallied 4 falls in the tournament … they include Kleine, Millan, Barak, Ullyak, and Wright that were mentioned above as well as:

    • Taelor Williams of Palm Beach Gardens had 4 falls in the shortest time at 3:02.

    • August Baton of Atlantic and Mateo Gelman of Cooper City also had 4 falls.

  • Ullyak, Kleine and Millan as well as Bengaly Kone of Cooper City were the ultimate “bad seeds” as none was seeded in the top 8, but each battled through their brackets to claim the title.

  • Dustin Lubin of Coral Springs, Jabrian Davis of Clewiston, Gabe Griffith of Clewiston, and Santiago Alvarez of Spanish River were also not seeded in the top 8 and came up one match short - taking 2nd.

Captain Archer Memorial Classic at Charlotte

  • Charlotte - one of the top teams in 2A - was dominant over a tough field as they cruised to the team title. Charlotte crowned 5 individual champs and put another 7 on the podium. This is a team that is going to be a problem in the post-season.

  • 6 wrestlers earned 30 points for their teams

    • Koen Hoffman of Lemon Bay

    • Dominic Rodriguez of Riverdale

    • Andrew Austin, Cael Newton, and Biaggio Frattarelli of Charlotte

    • Cory Cannan of Barron Collier

  • Hoffman, Rodriguez, Cannan, Frattarelli and Tyler Veltri of Venice each had 4 falls.

  • 20 wrestlers lost on the front side and then battled through the backside of their brackets - finishing with 5 matches.

  • The “Bad Seed:

    • How good was the Captain Archer seeded? Just two wrestlers that were not #1 seeds (and they were #2 seeds) won their bracket. Morvens Saint Jean of Ft Myers and Maximus Brady of Mariner are the only non-#1 seeds to win a title.

    • Just 3 wrestlers that were not seeded in the top 8 and finished in the top 3.

      • Diondre Houston of Braden River was seeded 14th and finished 2nd at 285

      • Reese Hibbard of Sarasota was seeded 13th and finished 3rd at 145

      • Jonathan Martinez of Dunbar was seeded 12th and finished 3rd at 132

    • 138 was the most accurately seeded weight of the tournament with an error of .101 and 160 was the worst with a seed error of .382.

40th Annual Kiwanis Invitational at Hernando HS

  • Clay crowned 3 individual champs, but it was their wrestling on the backside and their 3 runners-up that really separated them from Winter Springs as they claimed the Kiwanis title.

  • Blaine Reed of Crystal River and Elijah Penton of Winter Springs earned the most team points with 34 … Penton’s teammate Aiden Reichert was just behind them with 33.5 and Michael Shannon of the Master’s Academy had 33.

  • 6 wrestlers really fought through their brackets on the backside and earn the distinction of “Ironmen” after wrestling 8 matches:

    • Peyton Chancey of Brooksville Central at 160

    • Zach Williams of Lecanto at 170

    • Solomon Peterson of Heritage at 106

    • Reichert had 2 falls and a tech fall before taking out #3 seed Xavier Logan of Clay 11-5 in the quarters, pinning Jeremy Gradford of Newsome in the semis and downing top seed Gabriel Ferreira of Heritage 3-2 TB1 in the finals at 138.

  • Seeding was a challenge as 5 weights had a seed error factor over .5 (138, 220, 113, 285, and 195).

Capital City Classic at Chiles HS

  • Somerset outpointed both Wakulla and Lincoln to claim the Capital City title on Saturday.

  • Jordan Mills of Matanzas led all wrestlers by earning 32 team points - Tristan Sainz and Rashad Hannon of Somerset were 2nd with 31 points each.

  • Tim Dwyer of Niceville was a bonus point monster as he had 5 falls (7 others had 4)

  • Dwyer also had the most matches in the tournament with 8 followed by Kaiden Tibbetts of Ridgeview with 7. That’s what happens when you lose early and then battle through the backside.

  • Tristan Sainz was the only wrestler not seeded in the top 4 that climbed to the top step - making him the “bad seed” or the “bad draw”.

  • Ty Hawkins of Niceville was seeded 16th and finished 3rd and Jacob Nowak of Lincoln was seeded 6th and finished 2nd.

2021 Danny Byron at Osceola HS - Day 1 - Day 2 - Live on Trackwrestling

  • Unique format and not really able to highlight individual accomplishments with numbers because of the way it is done … still these wrestlers had a good tournament:

  • Jacarie Byrd of South Dade was the ultimate hammer … earning 28 team points for his team (more than anyone else in the tournament) … and yes we know that Jacarie advanced to the White bracket (not the Gold bracket) at 160. Still earning 28 points is an outstanding accomplishment.

  • Ian Wolski of Jupiter and Ryan Preisendorf of Jupiter had the most falls with 5.
