North Carolina State Duals History

Did a little digging for my conversation with Carolina Takedown Talk’s Ryan Mitchell and Rhett Hoy and came across a few interesting numbers that you might find interesting. If you didn’t get a chance to catch our discussion - you can find it at minute 48 of the youtube video below:

A few numbers you might find interesting:

  • 1A

    • No team other that Uwharrie Charter or Avery County have won a 1A State Dual Title in 5 years … the last was Rosewood in 2018 (41-27 over Robbinsville)

    • Who has the most 1A State Duals titles?

      • Nope - not Avery County (2) or Uwharrie Charter (2)

      • It isn’t Rosewood or Mitchell (both with 2 each also) or Robbinsville (1 in 2017).

      • It is Alleghany and West Wilkes with 4 each. Wilkes won all 4 of their titles from 2010-2013. Alleghany was the first team to win a 1A dual title in 2002 and then won 3 in a row from 2006-2008.

    • Most dominant dual win was by West Wilkes in 2010 - a 60-10 thumping of Rosewood

    • The closest dual was a 2-point margin back in 2004 with Elkin claiming the title with a 34-32 win over West Davidson

  • 2A

    • First Champ was Dixon in 1990; 2023 Champ was Newton-Conover

    • Newton-Conover would have the most titles (5), but the 2017 title was vacated leaving them with 4 and tied with West Lincoln

    • Closest Dual was 1 point and it has happened 4 times in 2A:

      • 1993: East Davidson 27, Ashe Central 26

      • 1999: Alleghany 37, Currituck 36

      • 2001: Pisgah 31, Southern Vance 30

      • 2013: Newton-Conover 31, Croatan 30

    • Most dominant dual final was in 2020 when Foard owned Croatan 59-9.

    • Teams in the 2024 2A Elite 8 that have never won a 2A title:

      • Trinity, Lincolnton, Madison, Seaforth, SW Onslow, Bunn, and Washington

      • Bunn is the only team to be close (taking 2nd in both 2022 and 2023)

      • West Lincoln is the only Elite 8 team to have a 2A title

  • 3A

    • First 3A Dual State Champion was TW Andrews in 1990. TW Andrews would win the first three (90-92).

    • Most dominant dual final was in 2008 when Parland downed Morehead 59-6

    • There have been 4 duals that have come down to 2 points:

      • 1995: Parkland 27, Ragsdale 25

      • 2005: Orange 30, East Gaston 28

      • 2017: Piedmont 29, Orange 27

      • 2018: Piedmont 33, Orange 31

    • Morehead owns the most 3A hardware with 7 titles from 1998 to 2016 as well as 5 runners-up finishes.

    • The only 2024 3A Elite 8 team to make a final is Union Pines who finished 2nd to Foard in both 2022 and 2023.

  • 4A

    • 6 different programs have won a 4A Duals Title in the last 8 years … just Northwest Guilford (2019 and 2023) and West Forsyth (2016 and 2017) have won it twice in that time.

    • Parkland won 5 in a row from 2010-2014, but it is Cary that holds the most titles with 9 (from 1993 to 2018). Cary also has finished 2nd 7 times.

    • Unlike the other classes … the Elite 8 in 4A this season has history of claiming a title.

      • Laney did it in 2022

      • Hough was the 4A Champs in 2020

      • Davie County claimed the title in 1994 and 2006

    • 4A is usually a close dual with the average margin of victory being 14 over the 33 4A finals since 1990.

      • Two of the duals came down to 1 point - Laney of NW Guilford 32-31 in 2022 and Cary over Independence 35-34 in 1998.
