Overview of North Carolina 4A Team Race

The North Carolina 4A team previews have been posted. You can find a link to them on the North Carolina page. Below is a short synopsis of each region:

State

Hough (4A West) are the defending Dual and Traditional State Champs. They return 10 with post-season experience including State Champ Richard Treanor and State Placers Jun Figueredo, Julian Rawlins, and Brandt Fajerman.

Laney (4A East) was 2nd to Hough in 2020. They return 7 with post-season experience including State Champ Mark Samuel and State Placers Emmanuel Bell, Devon Bell, Connor Johnson, and Casey Pollock.

Mooresville (4A West) was 3rd at traditionals in 2020 and return 9 including State Placers Luke Goodin, Davis Freeze, and Greg Merriman. They also add 2020 State Champ Caleb Tate who transfers in from Lake Norman.

Lake Norman (4A West) was 4th at traditionals in 2020 … they lose Tate to transfer and Kaiden Fisher and Timmy Kennett to graduation, but return 9 with post-season experience. Can Newton-Conover transfer Sakarri Morrison and State Placers Carson Floyd and JT Richards lead LN back to the top of the podium?

Northwest Guilford (4A Midwest) was 5th in 2020 - with the return of Riley Edwards, Marcus Harnarain, and James Joplin - this team will be in the thick of things at the end. They also return 10 with post-season experience.

Other teams that return multiple State Placers and more than 8 with post-season experience include:

  • Wake Forest (East) - 11 returners including Benjamin Lance and Ronnel Wilson.

  • Hickory Ridge (Midwest) - 9 returners including Parker Jones, Alex Bentley, Hunter Jones

  • Pinecrest (Midwest) - 8 returners including Matt Rowland and Jayden Dobeck

Teams to watch in each region (8 returners with post-season experience or more). There is nothing inherently special about having 8 returners - it is just where I drew the line. Don’t be surprised to see teams with 5, 6, or 7 do damage this year. Includes the teams mentioned above …
