Newberry opens season at Southeast Open

SALEM, VA. – Head Coach Deral Brown and the Newberry College Wrestling team traveled to Salem, Virginia, for the opening of the 2022-2023 season at the Roanoke Cregger Center for the first open of the year. After weeks of anticipation, hard work, and a successful intra squad scrimmage during Homecoming 2022, the Wolves would be looking to compete against competition other than themselves, and that would definitely be the case as many Division I programs would also be competing against Newberry. The competition would be a challenge, but Brown and the Wolves would be ready to see the competition offered across the country and see how his team would come out of the gates for the new season.

Overall, it would be a learning experience for the Wolves as with the many strong teams in the field, the level of competition would be high. The open would be highlighted by the performances of senior Devon Rice (285 lb; Rock Hill, S.C.), junior Christian Decatur (125 lb; Goldsboro, N.C.), senior Timothy Decatur (133 lb; Goldsboro, N.C.), freshman Zachary Hornsby (184 lb; Newberry, S.C.) and 149 pounder Devan Moore (149 lb; Baxley, Ga.), who would all secure wins in a match before eventually falling to the competition. Although the results were not in the favor of Newberry, nothing beats experience and after the competition, the Wolves left gaining experience against oppositions that they would not normally see and in anticipation of getting back home to get ready for the rest of the season.

Little Rock rolls over Chattanooga, shows off big growth at Battle in the River City

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Little Rock wrestling faced a trio of tough Division I teams today, dominating Chattanooga 28-5 at the end of a full day of wrestling. The Trojans took nine bouts from the Mocs at the neutral venue, a cherry on top of a competitive event for the team, after splitting bouts with Campbell and taking on powerhouse #14 Iowa State only minutes later.

"I knew it could go either way," said head coach Neil Erisman. "We had just lost a couple duals and we could've been down on ourselves, but I was happy with the way we responded. I challenged them to be tougher longer than their opponent, and we did exactly what we were capable of."

Little Rock also nearly stole the first dual of the day, opening with a tight 18-15 finish against Campbell, a team receiving votes in the NWCA Preseason Division I Wrestling Coaches poll. The Trojans split bouts with the Camels, with the scrappy match coming down to the very last bout.

"I think we could've won a couple other matches in that dual," added Coach Erisman. "We believed we were gonna win, and we believe we let them get away with one. Even though we didn't get the win, it showed us who we could be. We're doing harder and tougher things and we are growing up fast. It's excited to see."

Mocs open season at River City Duals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.---The Chattanooga Mocs wrestling program got the 2022-23 season started at the Battle in River City. The Mocs squared off with No. 12 Wisconsin, Buffalo and Little Rock on a busy Saturday at Swisher Gym on the Jacksonville University campus.

Rocky Jordan led the way with two wins in his two starts. Brayden Palmer matched him with two wins in his three matches on the day recording a team-high eight points. His 3-match scores added up to 19-2, just ahead of Jordan's 16-5 albeit in one fewer opportunity.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It started with a 35-3 loss to No. 12 Wisconsin. Jordan got the win with a 4-0 decision over Josh Otto. The Badgers captured close decisions at 125 (4-0), 133 (2-0), 157 (6-2) and 184 (5-3). The battle at 184 was especially interesting with true freshman Sergio Desiante nearly getting a win in his collegiate debut. 30th-ranked Logan Ashton lost to No. 6 Eric Barnett at 125, while No.23 Brayden Palmer was edged by 12th-ranked Taylor LaMont at 133.

Next up was Buffalo. Ashton and the Bulls Tristan Daugherty were knotted at 1-1 after seven minutes. Daugherty claimed the sudden victory with a takedown in the first extra period. Palmer blanked Mason Bush 4-0 at 133 before narrow decisions in the next three matches stretching the deficit to 9-3. Lincoln Heck (157) and Jordan (174) earned decisions to get it withing 12-9 with three matches to go, but the Bulls swept those for the 21-9 win.

It was a tough finale for the group losing 28-5 to Little Rock. Brayden Palmer had a dominating 17-0 tech fall at 133 for the only team scoring. Tough finishes at 141 and 149 with late takedown winners for the Trojans sent the squad in a direction they couldn't overcome.

Presbyterian - 3 Women claim 1st Place as Women and Men begin Season at Princeton Open

PRINCETON, N.J. – There was no shortage of headlines or noteworthy performances for the Presbyterian College women's and men's wrestling teams on Sunday afternoon, beginning the fourth season in program history at the multi-team Princeton Open with a trio of top prizes on the women's side and another top-three placement on the men's competition. Altogether, the Blue Hose kicked off the fall campaign with seven athletes making the top five of their respective weight classes (two of them in their debut event), highlighted by an individual championship from Samantha Miller, Sierra Marie Miller, and Paige Wehrmeister.

NOTABLES
- Picking up right where she left off to open her junior campaign with a flawless path to the 1st place trophy in the 101-lb. class, Samantha Miller utterly dominated her three opponents for a combined margin of 17-0, coming away with a first-period pin in all three rounds to unanimously take the first of three titles for a PC women's squad that starts off the season ranked 8th in the nation by the NWCA.

- Not one to be outdone by her fellow top-prize performer, sophomore Sierra Marie Miller mirrored her duplicate surname with a perfect route to the championship in the 130-lb. group. Taking four first-period pins in a row for a total score of 14-4, Miller became the second-ever Princeton Open women's champion in the footsteps of the Blue Hose's other Miller, claiming a 2-0 triumph over Lock Haven's Lily Sherer to seize the 1st-place accolade.
