Georgia State Tournament - Day 1

3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A hit the mats today and battled to their placement matches. They will be off until tomorrow night when each of those 4 classifications will crown a champ (as well as 2nd-6th). 1A, 2A, 7A, and Girls take center stage tomorrow during the day. Here is a quick look at the current team standing as well as the finals matches in 3A-6A.

Class 3A

3A is still in doubt as Gilmer has 8 wrestling tomorrow with Rockmart and Sonoraville each have 7. I assume placement points have already been awarded (and I don’t know the points still available for each team - in terms of placing 1st or 3rd as well as bonus). But with just 7 points separating Gilmer from Rockmart it is still in doubt (although Gilmer with one more finalist and a 7 point lead is in the drivers seat).

Class 4A

West Laurens came in with a chip on their shoulder and showed everyone that the dual title was no fluke. They wrestled outstanding and put 9 of their 11 qualifiers on the podium including 6 in the finals. The top 2 in the team race are set. The battle for 3rd is close with Columbus holding a 1.5 point advantage. And the battle for the 6 through 10 spots could all change with wins tomorrow evening.

Class 5A

Someone told me that Cass would wrap up the team title on Thursday evening … and they were right. Cass is 16 points up on Woodland (not sure if it is mathematically out of reach yet, but it has to be close) and with 6 in the finals and 3 in the consolation finals … they are on the cusp (maybe have already passed it) of making it a dual and traditional title in a very entertaining 5A. Woodland and Ola are in a dog fight for 2nd with the edge going to Woodland with 5 in the finals (but a point and a half is nothing). Remember the finals and consolation finals will be wrestled at the same time (at least that is what the schedule leads me to believe). Veterans and Walnut Grove are in a tight one for a top 5 finish and Jackson County and Cartersville are also very close for the 7 spot.

Class 6A

Buford has put this one to bed as they are up by 80ish points heading into the final 28 matches tomorrow. Valdosta has almost certainly taken 2nd (not sure if it is mathematically sealed yet or not but it has to be close). Brunswick and Creekview are neck and neck for a top 3 finish. Lee County, South Paulding and South Effingham are battling it out for a top 5 finish.
