Tennessee Boys WNO Results
This past Saturday at the Jones Center in Cleveland, the annual Who’s Number 1 event took place in what turned out to be a stacked card. The main event lived up to its billing and the undercard had a lot of fireworks as well. Let’s look at how it all shook out.
Prelims
80 pounds – Jaxon Flood (Cleveland) vs. Alex Whitted (Cookeville)
In a rematch from last winter’s Tennessee AAU state tournament where Flood would defeat Whitted via 4-1 decision, things would shake out in the opposite direction for last season's state champion and state runner-up. Whited would defeat Flood in the rematch via decision and claim the number 1 spot.
90 pounds – Dominic Cordero (Cleveland) vs. Noah Watkins (Dobyns Bennett)
In a battle of two Tennessee AAU state champions from a year ago, this match would be tight throughout. With both Cordero and Watkins having a ton of accomplishments on the national scene, this match could have gone in either direction. But on this night Watkins would defeat Cordero via a tight decision to grab the number 1 spot.
Main Card
106 pounds – Jose Cordero (Cleveland) vs. Jaxon Lane (McCallie)
Returning state champion from powerhouse Cleveland would meet 8th grade phenom from the McCallie school at 106 pounds. Cordero coming off double All-American status at Fargo this summer, while Lane won the 14u national championship in Greco, this was bound to be a good one. In what proved to be a tight match as expected, Cordero would edge out Lane via 4-3 decision to grab a number 1 ranking at 106 pounds.
113 pounds – Axel Ritchie (McCallie) vs. Tanner Tran (Father Ryan)
In a battle of two Tennessee Division state placers from a year ago, Tran and Ritchie would move up from 106 last season to 113 to see who was number 1 in Tennessee. Ritchie would take the early lead, but Tran would regain the lead in the final period and not look back. Tran would defeat Ritchie via 8-4 decision to pick up the number 1 ranking at 113 pounds.
120 pounds – Joseph Uhorchuk (Signal Mountain) vs. Mason Jakob (Dobyns Bennett)
In what turned out to be a VERY tight match between 1A state champion at 113 pounds Joseph Uhorchuk and 2A state champion at 113 pounds Mason Jakob, would come down to the wire. The third period was wild and nearly went in the other direction with a close near fall in favor of Jakob was not to be. Uhorchuk would narrowly edge out Jakob via a 2-1 decision and a number 1 ranking at 120 pounds.
126 pounds - Ethan Uhorchuk (Signal Mountain) vs. Joseph Calvin (Father Ryan)
1A state champion Ethan Uhorchuk would gain the only bonus point victory of the event with a 13-4 major decision win over Tennessee Division 2 state champion Joseph Calvin. Uhorchuk was in control of this match from the beginning and never let up, grabbing a number 1 ranking in the process.
132 pounds - Jarvis Little (Summit) vs. Cason Roark (Father Ryan)
In yet another tight decision at 132 pounds, 2A state champion from a year ago Jarvis Little would narrowly edge out Cason Roark via a tight 4-3 decision, with Little grabbing the number 1 ranking.
145 pounds - Nate Askew (Baylor) vs. Arash Yazdani (Brentwood)
In what would be a surprisingly tight match, Askew would outlast Yazdani via a tight 2-1 decision. Yazdani failed to place as a freshman at the Tennessee 2A state tournament but would place 4th last winter. After this performance against last season’s 138-pound state champion from Baylor School, Yazdani is a name to watch moving forward.
152 pounds - Chancery Deane (Father Ryan) vs. Brayden Leach (Summit)
Leach, who also failed to place at the state tournament as a freshman but rebounded with a 3rd place finish last winter made a splash! Leach would essentially dominate this match over last year’s Tennessee Division 2 state champion Chancery Deane. The final score would be a 10-5 decision with Leach grabbing the number 1 ranking, but it wasn’t that close. Leach is a name to also keep an eye on this winter.
215 pounds - Lucas Szymborski (Cleveland) vs. Ryder Smith (Chattanooga Christian)
In the battle of two stud football players competing right in the middle of football season, you could see the wrestling shape wasn’t there. But both guys showed up and competed. It appeared Szymborski was significantly smaller than Smith, but that wouldn’t make a difference. Szymborski would narrowly edge out Smith in a close 5-4 decision to grab the number 1 ranking. Props to these two guys for walking right off the football field and battling in a great match.
Main Event
160 pounds - Logan Fowler (Cleveland) vs. Maximus Norman (Baylor)
The main event was a banger! In the battle between state champions and Fargo All-Americans, this would send the crowd home happy. Norman would wrestle a smart match to force it into overtime with a dominant opponent in Fowler. Norman would get the takedown in overtime to pick up the number 1 ranking with a 5-3 win. This match could have truly gone either way. Props to both guys for a great performance.
