Tallassee (AL)

Tallassee finished 33rd in the 5A/6A State Tournament in 2021 … a bit lower than they normally do, but new alignments, Covid-season, and no sectionals made for a challenging season for everyone. Mason Bell, Ethan Stevenson, and Donald Ledbetter have graduated, but return 5 of their 8 State Qualifiers and look ready to get the Tigers back in the hunt in 2021-2022.

Land Bell and Rutland Phillips each won multiple matches at the state tournament and should play a big role in pushing this year’s squad. The Tigers also return Jake Debardelaben, Christian McCrary, and John Burnham. The focus might be on the return of Brendan Emfinger after missing last season. Coach Mask has a solid group that have the ability to make some noise in 5A/6A - they aren’t likely to make a run for a top 5 finish, but they could put several on the podium in Huntsville.

We have a great group of young men and we are very excited about the upcoming wrestling season. It is just always great to have the opportunity to wrestle and participate in the greatest sport ever.

The Bears return 4 State Qualifiers, but lose their leader from 2021 in State Placer Gavin Strain to graduation. That means the Bears will need for at least one of the four returners to step up and lead a young group in 2021-2022. David Latimer is a returning 2x State Qualifier and had multiple wins in Huntsville a year ago. Jadon Hill, Keviar Richardson, and Caiden Arnold also return after making the trip to Huntsville and will be counted on to make an impact in 2022. Keep an eye on Issac Lutz in the middle of the Bears lineup as well.

The team is really young and inexperienced, we’ve had success in the past when we have a had a few wrestlers step up. The hope is we have some kids who want to take on that role.

McAdory (AL)

McAdory finished 4th at the 5A-6A Alabama State Tournament and the Jackets return nearly all of their hammers in 2021-2022. They do lose PJ Henderson, Jacob Champion and Yaxzkhin Martinez, but return five of their placers and should be in the hunt for the team title. Alabama 5A-6A is extremely deep - so the path will be far from easy with Gardendale, Arab, and others ready to knock them off.

Hudson Waldrop, Cross Earley, Donald Phillips, Aiden Knight, and Savian Graham should give Coach Dutton a ton of confidence that he has a core group that is hungry for the title. Each climbed onto the podium in 2021 and each will be hunting for the top step (both individually and as a team) in 2022. Add in State Qualifiers William Miller, Christion Griggs, Carson Roberts, and Jaxon Hudgins and you have a team that can compete with anyone. Another big reason to watch McAdory is the return of three previous State Qualifiers/Placers that did not compete in 2021 due to injury or Covid. Marvin Barrera, KeAndre Poelinitz, and Curtis Weatherspoon should have an impact in 2022. Keep an eye on Erik Lessear (a move-in from Ohio) as well as Wesley Miller - both could make some noise in 2022.

We have a very solid line up. We have 6 state placers returning and 13 state qualifiers, if you count the guys that didn’t compete in 2021. We should be a contender for a state title this season if we can get everyone in the right weight class. This is a experienced team with guys that have had a great deal of mat time.
