State of the Program ... Russell County (AL)

Russell County (AL)

The Warriors are a team on the rise in Alabama 5A/6A. They qualified 7 for the 2021 State Tournament and four of those wrestlers return ready to make a return trip in 2022. More importantly - the Warriors have quite a new faces out and they look ready to follow those 4 returning qualifiers in 2021-2022.

Freshman Dan Bulens qualified last year as an 8th grader and returns after going 1-2 in Huntsville. He is joined by fellow qualifiers Owen Elledge, Julian Anthony, and Avery Boyette. Junior MJ Williams is looking to make a splash at heavyweight in his first season at Russell County. Freshman Rashad Scott is looking to build on his previous season from 2020 before covid. He was unable to participate last year. Several other newcomers are looking to make their mark in their first season of wrestling including Seniors Mark Olds and Michael Roberts. There are quite a few returning wrestlers who were unable to participate last year because of covid reasons, but have one year of wrestling experience from 2019 to 2020. If Coach Chamberlain can get all the peices to fit - this is a team that could make some noise in 2021-2022.

We are looking to have one of our best yet. We are returning four state qualifiers Freshmen Owen Elledge and Dan Bulens Sophomore Julian Anthony, Junior Avery Boyette. Many wrestlers were unable to participate last year because their parents had reservations about covid. This year has seen several commitments from more parents to allow their kids to wrestle. We are also returning eighth grader Kylie Mackey who earned fourth place in the girls state tournament last year.

State of the Program ... Huntsville (AL)
Panther (Center Red Adjusted).jpg

Huntsville (AL)

The Panthers lose some heavy hitters from a team that finished 5th in the Alabama 7A Traditional State Tournament. Zander Fields, Conner Cole, Dominick Ciccolella, Hunter Crane, Hunter Wilson, and Zachary Sanger accounted for 52% of the state tournament points from 2021. Usually that would mean that the team would need to look to rebuild and might take a few steps back the next year. That is not likely for Huntsville. They probably won’t be in the hunt for a top 2 finish with Thompson and Vestavia returning a ton of firepower, but they return enough to make a run at the top 3.

State Placers Hayden Bradford, Todd Whitmire, Max Morrow, and Brock Fields should lead the way and each will look to climb higher on the podium in 2022. Whether Huntsville finishes as high as 3rd or drops below their 5th place finish from a year ago will likely come down to how well Joseph Sowell, John John McKinney, and Jake Womble wrestle in 2022. Keep an eye on Wallace Blue, Dalton Wood, and freshmen Kiyan and Yanik Simon … if they can make an impact Huntsville will be right back in the mix again in 2022.

This is an eager, hardworking, young & talented group. I love coming to lifts & practices as these guys are a very fun & exciting group of young men that love to compete, but most importantly work in the classroom and strive to being solid representatives of Huntsville HS and their community & families.
