State of the Program ... Harlem (GA)

By this time - many of you have seen that we are doing highlights of different teams across the SE as we gear up to drop the team previews in 6 weeks. I was releasing one team a day, but with now over 170 teams having sent in information - I’ll try to ramp it up a bit so we can get as many in as possible before the first part of October. I can’t guarantee I’ll get to everyone, but I will try to get to as many as possible.

Please re-visit when the actual previews get dropped in October because what I am sharing below are just a few of the names the coaches have given me. Much more will be shared - plus SEWrestle’s “What to Expect” - in the team previews. Lastly, if you want to know whether we have your form … you can find the list of everyone that has submitted a form in the blog archive.

Harlem (GA)

Coach Waters enters year 8 at Harlem and looks to have a group that can make some noise in 2022. Senior State Qualifiers Donovan Miller and Luke Rhodes will lead the way after the graduation of State Runner-up Chandler Diles. Both Miller and Rhodes won multiple matches at the state tournament last year and should be hunting for a spot on the podium in 2022.

The Dawgs also return State Qualifiers Chance Diles, Zaire Herder, Dylan Hiller, and David Stanton … making Harlem one of the teams to beat in 3A Area 3. Keep an eye on Mason Linkous as well as freshmen Braxton Gross and Ryan Rector.

The Bulldogs won the Area Duals, but fell short of making the Elite 8 last year and finished runner-up at the Traditional. We have 9 starters coming back with 4 wrestlers making Top 12 last year. Really excited about our incoming Freshman class. This year, we will be led by ours Seniors Donovan Miller 126 and Luke Rhodes 195. We had a great summer workouts and looking forward to the season. GO DAWGS!!

Lumpkin County (GA)

Two years ago - Lumpkin County had quite the senior class and put several members of the Tribe on the podium. Last year they did a little rebuilding, but still put 3 on the podium … Kerwin Martinez (2nd at 126), Jack Irwin (2nd at 145), and Trevor Coryell (3rd at 170).

This year Lumpkin County will likely turn to the youth movement as a new batch of the Tribe comes in and will look to make their impact. Martinez returns after an outstanding freshman campaign and will look to claim the top step in 2022. The Tribe also returns State Placer TJ Payne and he looks to climb the podium in 2022. The bulk of the team looks to be freshmen and sophomores with just a few upperclassmen. Keep an eye on Nathan Nielsen, AJ Scott, Walker Scott and Jacob Matthews … the four freshmen will look to make a dent in the lineup in 2021-22.

Lumpkin County has developed quite a solid group for the girls team and they should be competitive in 2021-22 as well. The team finished 19th a year ago and return 3 of their 4 State Qualifiers. Gwennie Wright, Abby Jones, and Annalise Koegler will be joined by Chloe Carver and the four will look to push Lumpkin County into the top 15 in 2022.

Lambert (GA)

State Runners-up Dylan Lobdell and Thomas Dossett as well as State Placer Mason McClung return and will lead Coach Contardi’s squad into the 2021-2022 season. The Longhorns lose State Placers Lucas Teillon (graduation) and Jacob Zearfoss (move) as well as State Qualifier Robert Riddle, but return a good lineup that will look to match their top 5 finish from a year ago.

Look for Ethan Kidd to make an impact and climb onto the podium and for Elijah Castillo and Drew Wentworth to be big players in Lambert being back in the hunt again in 2022.

We look to have a solid squad this year. The two biggest keys will be replacing some good leadership that we graduated and separating our best guys.
