Sequoyah (GA)

Hulen takes over the Sequoyah program after quite a run at Creekview. I expect you will see the same talent, determination, and effort that you’ve seen from the Creekview program over the last few years begin to develop at Sequoyah. Hulen takes over a Sequoyah program that was far from devoid of talent … so the Chiefs could be competitive very early in Hulen’s tenure. They do lose State Runner-up Carson Thorne to graduation, but return State Placers Logan Webster and Charlie Thorne … both should lead the way in 2021-2022.

Sequoyah also returns Hudson Andrews, Ryan Thorne, and Kemar Plummer - each of which had wins at the state tournament in 2021. If Hulen can put Webster and Thorne high on the podium, Andrews, Thorne, and Plummer on the podium and a few others to score points … Sequoyah could make some noise in 2022. Keep an eye on Aidan Mahon-Merriman, Tayo Ogundele, and Ryan Ligon.

Sequoyah has been knocking on the doors of being a championship team for a few years now. We are excited to compete and show what Sequoyah Wrestling is all about.

State of the Program ... Valdosta (GA)

Valdosta (GA)

Besides defending Champs Buford - no other 6A team in Georgia returns as many points (or as much quality) as Coach Robbins’s squad. This team is uber talented from top to bottom with few (if an) holes in their lineup. They also return Darrell Rochester (Fargo All American a couple of years ago and State Runner-up) - who could be huge if they are going to knock off the defendign Champs.

Make no mistake - State champs Kaleb Davis and Josh McCutchen as well as State Placer Tyler Lamon pace the Cats … they are their hammers and will set the tone for this team in 2021-2022. But add in Rochester as well as 8 other State Qualifiers including Cam Bradley, John Nelson, D’Avion Davis and others and the Cats are as tough a team in Georgia as you can find. With all the talent in Valdosta it is sometimes easy to overlook those flying under the radar … keep an eye on State Qualifier (and transfer from Miller Grove) Jamal Walker as well as Senior Greg White.

As a team, the expectation is to win another state championship. Individually, we have several young men who could find themselves on top of the podium in February.

Pickens (GA)

Pickens is always a fun team to watch. The Dragons come ready to compete and they will need that more than ever in 2021-2022 after graduating a significant number of starters last year. Gone are CJ Murphy, Andrew Burrell, Zak Price, and others … wrestlers that accounted for about half of their points at the 2021 State Tournament.

That doesn’t mean the Dragons won’t be competitive in 21-22 - they return 2021 State Placer Kaleb Nicholson to lead the way, but will need to look to some new faces to make an impact if the team is going to break into the top 15 in 2022. Dylan Gonzalez returns after a solid freshman campaign (3 wins at the State Tournament) and he should be hunting for a spot on the podium in 2022. Keep an eye on Chris Knight, Carson Cannon, Mason Powell, and Eli Rittenberry this season.

We graduated seven starters last season, and only two upcoming seniors are currently on the roster. We will need a lot of new faces to step up to fill out the line-up. Thankfully, we have a young core headed by three returning state qualifiers. It will be interesting to see how our team adapts and grows over the course of the season.
