Columbus (GA)

Columbus is a team on the rise in Georgia 4A. The Blue Devils finished 8th at the Traditional State Tournament in 2021 and should expect to better that in 2022 - do we have a top 5 team here? They do lose Sean Mulvany, Tristan Villegas-Riedel, and Austin Toelle, but that pales in comparison to their returners. Columbus returns a pair of freshman State Placers in Tyler Nyguen and Tyler Secoy - each finished 3rd and each will be hunting the top step in 2022. The Blue Devils also return State Placer Sam Lesh who finished 5th as a freshman. Add in Jonathan McDaniel - State Runner-up transfer from Shaw - and the Blue Devils could have 4 on top of the podium in 2022 (and 3 are sophomores).

The key for Columbus, like so many others, is the development of the others on the roster. Adrien Villegas-Riedel and Jett Rapp both scored points at the state tournament a year ago and will look to make the podium in 2022. How high Columbus climbs might come down to how well Tyranny McGowan, Rishi Polepally, Jack Decker, and Tyson Morris wrestle in 21-22. Keep an eye on Mason Person - the freshman will look to make an impact in 2022 as well.

We are looking forward to a great year. We are a younger team with only 2 seniors, but we have several Jr’s and Sophomores that will step up into leadership roles. We have a really strong schedule, with Macallie and Knockout. We have high expectations this year. We were not happy with the dual results last year. We are looking to repeat as area champs in both duals and Traditionals. We had 2 freshman finish 3rd and another freshman finished 5th all 3 have worked hard this off season.

Madison County (GA)

Madison County lives with the big dogs in Georgia 4A - Jefferson (Champs), North Oconee (2nd), Flowery Branch (3rd) as well as East Hall, Chestatee, and others. The Red Raiders have been in the mix with those teams for the last several years, but enter the 2021-2022 season without their hammer (and State Champ) Josh Kincaid. That means the Red Raiders will be looking to some new faces to step up and lead the way in a very tough region. Casey Lovelace returns after qualifying for the State Tournament a year ago at 152 and should be one of the four to help lead the way.

Dalton Giles, Toby House, and Tristan Poss each finished 4th in the region a year ago (a year in which the GHSA didn’t have sectionals and took the top 3 from each region to the state tournament). I’d expect those four to set the tone for the Red Raiders in 2021-22. Keep an eye on Brodie Hawks, Will Hartlage, and Nate Krickel as well as Jace Jachimiski and Bryer Autry as they will look to make some noise this coming season. The Red Raiders have tough road ahead of them, but will look to continue the climb against the best 4A has to offer.

Team wise looking for top 4 finish in tough AAAA region 8. Looking to always produce state champs and state placers

Lassiter (GA)

Lassiter finished 2nd to Buford in the 2021 team race at the 6A Traditional State Tournament. The Trojans lost some significant firepower with the graduation of State Champ RJ Weston, State Runner-up Frankie Valle, as well as State Placer Jack Dyess (and others). The Trojans lost more than 50% of their points (point-getters) from 2021 and will need some others to step up if they are going to be back in the mix again in 2022.

The Trojans do return State Champ David Panone and State Placers Ananth Manibushan and Jacobee Connell. All three will play a huge role in 2022 and each will be hunting the top step in February. The key for Lassiter is getting returning State Qualifiers Riley McElligot and Anthony Fiorenza on the podium, getting Alex Le and Noah Flisser to the state tournament and continue developing the next group which includes Carter Brickley. May Prado, Girls State Placer, is tough and will almost certainly be amongst the favorites to claim a state title at the Girls State Tournament (she was 4th in 2021).

Graduated some firepower for sure, but we still return a solid team. We’re expecting to put a lot on the podium in February.
