Coach Mask has always had a tough, hard-nosed group at Tallassee - whether they were in a hunt for a title or not … they always come to wrestle. In 2023, they had an outstanding squad that finished top 10 at the traditional state tournament and lost to Jasper 38-33 in the state duals finals. They graduate a few hammers in Rutland Phillips, Caden Griffith, and Corbin Grover, but don’t be surprised if this Tallassee team is even better than the 2023 edition. Eight State Qualifiers return including State Champion Land Bell and State Placer Mason Nelson. They also welcome 3 hammers to the mix in transfers Ramon Lozada, 4th in 6A, and Roman McWilliams, 5th in 6A, from Wetumpka and freshman Thomas Patterson. Patterson sat behind State Runner-up Rutland Phillips last year as an 8th grader and will look to make some noise at 106 in 2023-24. With Patterson, Nelson, Lozada, and returning State Qualifier Avery Brantley manning the bottom of the lineup this team will be tough from the start. Whether Tallassee can knock off the other 5A powers will likely come down to whether returning State Qualifiers Tramel McCoy, Christian McCary, Nolan Addeo, Ethan Jones, and Joseph Hooks can climb onto the podium in Huntsville. Lots of talent on this team … 5A better be prepared … Tallassee is coming for the title in 2024. - SEWrestle

Greenwood might be the 2nd best team in South Carolina … unfortunately they sit in 4A with (in my opinion to best team - Eastside). That doesn’t mean Greenwood doesn’t have a shot at the title (or the distinction of being the best team in the state), but it does mean they will need their “A” game in 2023-2024. Greenwood returns a ton of hammers on the top side of their lineup. Bryce and Dax Seaborn, Owen Sargent, and Alijah Wade are all hunting the top step after finishing elsewhere on the podium in 2023. Cason Howle is one of the best 190’s in the SE and will look to claim another title in 2024. But in order for Greenwood to push Eastside and the other top 4A teams this season they will need 106-157 to step up. Greenwood has the top locked down, but how high they climb will come down to how well Jose Cortez-Lopez, Rylan Umbaugh, Robert Walker, McAllister Byrd, and others wrestle. All four have post-season experience and will be counted on to come up big this season. Keep an eye on 3 freshmen that could make some noise and help solidify the bottom of the lineup in Jesus Molina, Billy Williams, and Luke Howle. - SEWrestle

2023 Recap: Finished 37th at the Traditional State Tournament

Individuals:

  • Jade Lenhart - 6th at 165

Graduated:

2023-2024

Returners (Grade):

  • 120 Jasmine Norris

  • 138 Jianna Bare

  • 165 Jade Lenhart

  • 185 Ellysia Jennings

Lenhart is a returning state placer. She lost 3-2 in the opening round of the 2023 state tournament and then had to fight her way back onto the podium with 3 falls in the consis. She is just a junior this season and will look to lead this crew this coming season and be hunting a spot on the top step for herself at the state tournament. Both Jasmine Norris and Jianna Bare won matches at the Region 2 Tournament and both will be looking to punch their ticket to the state tournament this season. Lastly, rising freshman Ellysia Jennings is one to watch. She has competed a ton this summer (National Duals, Fargo, etc.) and is absolutely one to watch this season. - SEWrestle
