Thursday Night Smackdown ... Region Qtrs and Semis of the Florida 3A State Duals

Just a quick overview of information I was able to track down …

District 1 and 2 Quad

Flagler Palm Coast - the District 2 Champs - downed Oakleaf 45-27 as Deland took out Creekside 46-28. This led to a rematch of FPC vs. Deland for a spot in the Elite 8. Deland jumped out to an 18-3 lead before Kole Hannant and John Haid got FPC back within striking distance. Deland pushed the lead up again with falls from Josh Folson, Lane Wishart, and a forfeit for Mathias Franz … but that is all Deland would get leading 36-15 with 5 matches remaining. FPC’s Garrick Schwartz shut the door with a 3-1 decision on the 195 lb. match (the last match of the evening) to seal the with 42-36.

District 3 and 4 Quad

District 4 Champs Hagerty cruised over Windermere 72-3 and Timber Creek battled to the final match to get the win over District 3 Champs Apopka 39-35. That setup a rematch with Hagerty and Timber Creek. Hagerty got out to a nice lead 16-6 in the first 5 matches (the dual began at 160), but then watched hat lead slip away as Peter Nesheiwat (285), Diego Weiser (106), and Trenton Dominguez (113) each put up 6 for their squad to put TC in the lead 24-16 with 6 matches remaining. Hagerty got falls from Higgins, Genao, and Mejia and Hagerty was able to regain control and ended up with a comfortable 46-30 win to advance to the the Elite 8.

District 5 and 6 Quad

District 5 Champs Osceola started things off with a 48-30 win over Palm Harbor and District 6 Champs George Steinbrenner looked superb in taking down George Jenkins 53-21. That led to Osceola vs. Steinbrenner for a spot in the Elite 8. The bout began at 152 and the Kowboys (Osceola) came out like gangbusters … winning 6 of the first 7 matches to go up 34-3 at the halfway point of the dual. Steinbrenner’s Ryan Nguyen and Joey Vitale got them back in the mix with 2 falls at 106 and 113, but then Osceola countered with a decision win by Isfandier Shaipov 10-6 over Daniel Bush at 120. Heap and Haase won tough matches down below and matched Steinbrenner’s Odegaard and Diaz to seal the win for the Kowboys 44-27.

Osceola wins 9 matches to Steinbrenner’s 5

Osceola advances

District 7 and 8 Quad

Couldn’t find specific duals for this quad so the results will need to suffice. Palmetto Ridge rolled over Lakewood Ranch 58-15 and Riverdale downed Manatee 34-33 in what had to be a thrilling dual between the two 3A powerhouses. Palmetto Ridge looks like a team to watch as they beat Riverdale 51-21.

Palmetto Ridge won 9 matches to Riverdale’s 5

Palmetto Ridge advances

District 9 and 10 Quad

Another quad where the information doesn’t appear on trackwrestling anywhere. So just some quick results … Ft Pierce Central downed Freedom 46-29 and then beat Harmony to advance.

Ft Pierce Central advances

District 11 and 12 Quad

Wellington downed Jupiter with ease 61-15 and Olympic Heights beat Palm Beach Gardens 57-24 to setup a district finals rematch between Wellington and Olympic Heights. This one wasn’t close as Wellington rolled … the wolverines won 11 of the first 12 matches and put a ribbon the dual before we were halfway through - cruising to a 59-15 over a tough Olympic Heights squad.

Wellington won 11 matches to Olympic Heights 3

Wellington advances

District 13 and 14 Quad

Another quad where we simply have results … Cypress Bay had a bye and met host Western in the finals where they rolled to a 53-27 win.

Cypress Bay advances

District 15 and 16 Quad

On paper the best quad in 3A … and it didn’t disappoint. Defending State Champs South Dade rolled over Miami Beach 57-17 and top 5 Columbus downed a game Doral Academy 48-28 to setup a rematch of the District 16 foes. South Dade and Columbus traded punches from 106-138 (each taking 3 wins - South Dade forfeited at 2 of the weights, but 12 points isn’t nothing). But it was Matthew Abreu, Jacarie Byrd, Alex Couto and company that solidified the win for the Bucs as they won 49-21.

South Dade won 10 matches to Columbus 4

South Dade advances

The FHSAA bracket has not been updated, but visit Kabra and Brant has produced a nice graphic of the Elite 8.
