Thursday Night Smackdown ... Region Qtrs and Semis in 1A
Just a quick overview of information I was able to track down …
Districts 1 and 2
Not much on trackwrestling - so just results as Wakulla downs Suwannee in a rematch of District 2 teams 31-30 in what must have been an outstanding dual.
Wakulla advances
Districts 3 and 4
Another quad where there are no results on trackwrestling … but Clay rolls over Episcopal and Baker County to punch their ticket to the Elite 8.
Clay advances
Districts 5 and 6
Yet another quad where we can’t breakdown the dual … Hernando beat Seabreeze and The Villages fairly easily to advance.
Hernando advances
Districts 7 and 8
Yep - no breakdown of duals … Palm Bay downs Mulberry and McKeel Academy to advance.
Palm Bay advances
Districts 9 and 10
Hudson beats Berkeley Prep in a banger 42-39 in match that came down to bonus points. Hudson then downed Zephyrhills Christian to advance. This match started a little rough for Hudson as they dropped 5 of the first 7 matches and trailed ZC 30-12 at the halfway point. Fortunately Hudson could turn to the strength of their lineup to help turn things around. Charles Wita (160), Matthew Tanner (170), Cole Kanehl (182), Robb Philippus (195), and Gavyn Uribes (220) each secured falls as Hudson roared back into the lead 42-30 … a fall for Elijah Austin of Zephyrhills Christian at 285 meant it would come down to the 106’s. Tyler Parton of Hudson got the fall and sealed the win 48-36.
Hudson had 8 wins and Zephyrhills Christian had 6
Hudson advances
Districts 11 and 12
Lemon Bay and First Baptist Naples each took care of business in the opening round and then battled it out for a spot in the Elite 8. Each team won 7 matches and it ended up being bonus points that separated the two teams in the end. Forfeits by First Baptist at 160, 182, and 195 would end up proving costly. Yes they may have lost by fall in all 3 matches (as they would have wrestled Hoffman, Schyck, and Diaz), but have those 3 holes made the path to victory more difficult for First Baptist. Logan Kelly, Caleb Corridino, and Chase Alden all took losses for Lemon Bay, but each lost by points and that was ultimately the difference in the final score.
Lemon Bay advances
Districts 13 and 14
Not sure there was a better region quad anywhere in the state on Thursday night. Cardinal Gibbons downed Clewiston with relative ease and Jensen Beach downed the defending State Champs Somerset 41-30 to advance to the showdown with Gibbons. Jensen Beach’s ability to get to 8 wins in the dual vs. Somerset is ultimately what was the difference. JB had to then turnaround and take on a red hot Gibbons squad. The match began at 106 and immediately Jensen Beach moved Ben Norris and Sebastian Degennaro up to get two wins (Degennaro’s was a major). Ryan Mooney followed that up with a solid 11-4 decision of Jonathan Hudson at 120 to put JB up 10-0. Ryan McWilliams took a forfeit for Gibbons at 126 and Nicholas Yancey downed Ryan Duguay 6-1 at 132 to narrow the dual to 10-9 after 6 matches. Jewell Williams came up with perhaps the biggest win of the evening - a 1-0 decision of Mathew Palermo at 138 to push the JB lead to 13-9 at the halfway point.
Diego Perlata evened the dual score up with a major decision at 145 over Colton Byrd (13-13). JB’s Dylan Fox downed Robert Limperis 5-3 at 152 and Duke Byfield beat Christian Yancey 11-3 to put Jensen Beach back in front 20-13 with 5 matches remaining. Gibbons’s Danil Korochenskiy and Richard Tauriello put Gibbons in the lead with a decision and a fall at 170 and 182 (Gibbons leads 23-20). Jensen Beach got two falls at 195 and 220 by Matt O’Hara and Malachi Harriel to seal the win and put Jensen Beach into the Elite 8 with a 31-29 win.
Jensen Beach won 8 matches and Cardinal Gibbons won 6.
Jensen Beach advances
