2022 State Dual Series Overview
Things to know:
It is a 3-step process to determine the state duals champion in each classification
District Duals are wrestled up to January 8th (Top 2 Teams Advance) - some teams completed their district duals in December, but the vast majority of them occur the week of January 3rd-8th.
You can find the list of District sites at FHSAA.
Regional Duals (or Sub-State) are wrestled Thursday January 13th (Top Team Advances)
Competition will be conducted in four regional complexes in each classification. Districts 1-4 will comprise the Region 1 complex, Districts 5-8 the Region 2 complex, Districts 9-12 the Region 3 complex, and Districts 13-16 the Region 4 complex. One tournament will be conducted in each regional complex.
First Round of Regional State Series - The four (4) District dual meet team champions and (4) Runners-up in each District - Districts 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16 - will compete in the Dual Regional Tournament. The first round on Tuesday will be Individual dual sites to be determined by the bracket
Second Round of Regional State Series - The four first round winners will meet on Thursday and complete the Regional bracket which will consist of the semifinal and final round. Winners advance to the State Championships.
The FHSAA Wrestling Finals state tournament shall be held on Friday and Saturday (January 21st and 22nd).
By this point in the season I probably do not have to explain the difference between duals and tournaments, but a quick refresher on duals and dual scoring:
Order: Most of the time the dual begins at 106 and proceeds through the weight classes and concludes at heavyweight. That is not mandatory and the dual can start anywhere in the 14 weight classes … so if the dual starts at 145 it will proceed through the weight classes until it finishes at 138. As you can see in the example below (I took the dual between Clay and Wakulla at last year’s state tournament) - the dual began at 126 and finished at 120 (read from top to bottom).
Scoring: An individual match is scored just like it always is … 2 points for a takedown, etc. The dual is scored the same way you may have seen throughout the season … but in case you were confused here is a brief idea of how it is done:
A fall is worth 6 pts
A technical fall (difference between individual wrestlers is 15 or more points) is worth 5 pts.
A major decision (difference between individual wrestlers is 8 or more, but under the 15) is worth 4 points.
A regular decision (basically a win without a fall, tech fall, or major), is worth 3 points.
Teams can be deducted points for a variety of reasons, but I won’t get into that.
Below is an example from last year’s 1A State Tournament between Wakulla and Clay
