A Fan's Guide to the Georgia 3A State Tournament
Welcome to the Fan’s Guide for the GHSA 3A State Tournament
So what is a Fan’s Guide?
The Fan’s Guide is a look at the tournament as a whole and each individual weight class … from a fan’s perspective. But it is not a prediction of who will win or who will make the podium. In fact, a Fan’s Guide is a little different. It is a look at a few individual pieces from each bracket … they include:
Favorite: the wrestler that enters the tournament as a section champ and has the best shot to claim the top step.
Contenders: a wrestler that finishes 1st or 2nd at sectionals has a decent chance to make the podium … one of the champs and both runners-up should be considered contenders.
Darkhorse: a wrestler that finished 3rd or 4th at one of the sectional tournaments, but could make a run for the top step.
Bracketbuster: a wrestler that finished 5 or 6 in their section, but could make a run for the podium.
Isn’t that kind of a prediction?
Yes and no. I do identify the favorite, but beyond that I have no idea of who will march through the bracket and claim a title (don’t get me wrong - I’ve watched a lot of wrestling this season so I have an idea of what will happen). I could give you an educated guess about a possible finals match and who will make the podium, but in the world of high school wrestling that is dangerous territory. Few wrestlers (if any) are unbeatable … but we do have past results and past accomplishments on which to make a guess or two. In reality, I am as much of a fan as any of you and like to talk wrestling. I hope each athlete goes out and performs to her ability and we, as fans, get an opportunity to watch some great wrestling.
Remember the sole purpose of the website, twitter, instagram, fan’s guides, pictures, etc. is to promote the sport in the Southeast. Have a great time this weekend, enjoy the wrestling, and best of luck to everyone competing.
NOTE: ALL INFORMATION BELOW IS ASSUMING THAT THE INFORMATION INPUTTED INTO TRACKWRESTLING EITHER BY THE EVENT DIRECTOR OR THE COACHES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON IS CORRECT.
A Look Back to 2023
Team Race
One of the wildest classes in Georgia in 2023. 6 teams within reach of claiming the team traditional title. Each had between 7 and 9 qualifiers (Pike County which had 10 finished in 8th). So take a look above … Ringgold actually tied with the most placers (2 champs and 5 placers) with Franklin County (7 placers), but finished tied for 3rd and Franklin was 4th. So how did Gilmer end up on top with fewer qualifiers, placers, and the same number of champs? Bonus baby! As we’ve talked about with the other classes - qualifiers and placers is the key, but in very close races we have to look at other factors. Gilmer brought 7 and all 7 scored points … even Luis Lucas (144) and Alex Raymundo (126) who didn’t make the podium scored important points (7 in all … more than the difference between Gilmer and Runner-up Pickens). Pickens brought 9, but had one wrestler not score any points. Bremen brought 8 but had one wrestler not score any points. Ringgold brought 9, but had one wrestler not score any points … you see a pattern? Qualifiers are only helpful in the team race if they get you points. Those three teams essentially had one fewer qualifier than what is listed above. Add that to bonus points … Gilmer had more falls than anyone else (more than double than Ringgold) and you begin to see how the smallest things can add up to the difference between a team title and finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th. Expect the same type of battle this year.
Section Success Predicts State Success
Nothing is given, everything is earned … but there is a strong correlation between how well someone does at sectionals and their success in Macon. Ultimately team (and individual) success begins at sectionals (and honestly long before that). There is a direct relationship between being a Section Champ and eventually making the state podium. Keep that in mind when looking at our favorites, contenders, etc. further down the Guide.
We have the typical in 3A and the atypical. Typical … 13 of 14 champs were section champs, the other being a section runner-up. The atypical … the same percentage of section runners-up made the podium as section champs. It is always pretty close, but this is the first time I’ve seen it when looking at all of the classes. We had some darkhorses and bracketbusters as well. Jett Johnson of Adairsville finished 5th in Section A at 285 and made a run to the 3A finals. We laso had 10 others that finished 5th or 6th at their sectional tournament that made the podium.
Team Notes
The table below is a list of every qualifier by school, along with their place. So we could talk about a number of different teams, but in reality there are just a handful that have enough to really make a run for a team title. They are discussed below the table.
Bremen has the most qualifiers, but Columbus holds all of the cards. With 6 section champs they are going to be tough to beat in Macon. Don’t get me wrong - they could slip up and numbers play a huge role, but they have 8 wrestlers with a legit shot at a spot on the podium. Bremen will need their 5’s and 6’s to make some noise if they are going to top Columbus. Lumpkin County, Ringgold, Franklin County, and Adairsville will be in the hunt, but again it will be tough to not only make up the ground on section champs (who are very likely to make the podium … 23 of 28 did at last year’s tournament), but also to make-up the ground with fewer wrestlers.
