A Fan's Guide to the Georgia Girls State Tournament
Welcome to the Fan’s Guide for the GHSA Girls State Tournament
So what is a Fan’s Guide?
The Fan’s Guide is a look at the tournament as a whole and each individual weight class … from a fan’s perspective. But it is not a prediction of who will win or who will make the podium. In fact, a Fan’s Guide is a little different. It is a look at a few individual pieces from each bracket … they include:
Favorite: the wrestler that enters the tournament as a section champ and has the best shot to claim the top step.
Contenders: a wrestler that finishes 1st or 2nd at sectionals has a decent chance to make the podium … one of the champs and both runners-up should be considered contenders.
Darkhorse: a wrestler that finished 3rd or 4th at one of the sectional tournaments, but could make a run for the top step.
Bracketbuster: a wrestler that finished 5 or 6 in their section, but could make a run for the podium.
Isn’t that kind of a prediction?
Yes and no. I do identify the favorite, but beyond that I have no idea of who will march through the bracket and claim a title (don’t get me wrong - I’ve watched a lot of wrestling this season so I have an idea of what will happen). I could give you an educated guess about a possible finals match and who will make the podium, but in the world of high school wrestling that is dangerous territory. Few wrestlers (if any) are unbeatable … but we do have past results and past accomplishments on which to make a guess or two. In reality, I am as much of a fan as any of you and like to talk wrestling. I hope each athlete goes out and performs to her ability and we, as fans, get an opportunity to watch some great wrestling.
Remember the sole purpose of the website, twitter, instagram, fan’s guides, pictures, etc. is to promote the sport in the Southeast. Have a great time this weekend, enjoy the wrestling, and best of luck to everyone competing.
NOTE: ALL INFORMATION BELOW IS ASSUMING THAT THE INFORMATION INPUTTED INTO TRACKWRESTLING EITHER BY THE EVENT DIRECTOR OR THE COACHES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON IS CORRECT.
A Look Back to 2023
Team Race
So a lot to unpack here … in the first Girls State Tournament where a team champion was recognized … Chestatee was later stripped of the title and I don’t believe either Carrollton or Gilmer were awarded the title … it was simply vacated. I say that because if you look back at trackwrestling you will see Chestatee removed from the team scores. We have included them above because it is still relevant to the discussion about how to win a state traditional team title, but know that they are not on the official record as having won. I have also truncated the team race above because so many schools had one qualifier, but again it isn’t relevant to the discussion of the team race. The data I have for the above table was pulled long before Chestatee was removed and had to vacate the title. Just for curiosity sake - I wonder how they handled the situation with Gabriel Phillips of Grovetown who finished 2nd at 155 to the wrestler that was later deemed ineligible. Same refrain as we see on the boys except with fewer qualifiers - which means placers mean that much more.
Just look at Jackson County - 2 qualifiers, 2 State Champs and 4th (3rd after Chestatee was ruled ineligible). So numbers matter, but with fewer numbers - placers are huge. Combine those two and you have a state championship team.
Team Notes
The table below is a list of every qualifier by school, along with their place. So we could talk about a number of different teams, but in reality there are just a handful that have enough to really make a run for a team title. They are discussed below the table.
This is really a 7 team race for the traditional team title. Jefferson, Chestatee, Gainesville and the other teams that qualified 3 have an outside shot, but things would need to go extremely well for them to claim the title. Not to say they won’t be in the hunt or can’t finish in the top 3, but making up the ground on each of the teams above them is going to be difficult. The team race always comes down to qualifiers and placers.
Qualifiers are opportunities. Without horses in the race - you have no shot to win and that is what we are talking about with qualifiers. They provide an opportunity for points.
Placers ultimately get you points. Last year it looks as if the GHSA simply awarded placement points because all 14 champions earned their team 22 points. Each runner-up scored 18 points and so on. For those of you that are new … that is not how state tournaments are normally scored. Usually, a wrestler can earn their team points in 3 ways: 1) placement (what we are talking about above), 2) advancement (winning matches on your way to the podium), and 3) bonus (getting a fall or a tech fall earns more points than a decision). If you look at the boys state tournament from last year you will champions earning their team a range of points based on the above.
So … with 6 qualifiers each - Woodward Academy, Carrollton, and Greenbrier are in the drivers seat. They simply have more opportunities to score points. Gilmer has 5 qualifiers with Lumpkin County, Jordan, and Tift County each having 4 qualifiers. Woodward Academy also sits in the best spot amongst the top 3 teams because they have 3 Section Champs and 1 Runner-up.
Matchups could also play a role:
Woodward Academy’s 6 qualifiers are at 100, 120, 140, 145, 155, and 190
Carrollton’s 6 qualifiers are at 130, 135, 140, 145, 170, and 190
Greenbrier’s 6 qualifiers are at 100, 105, 120, 145, 155, and 190
Gilmer’s 5 qualifiers are at 105, 130, 135, 155, and 235
Lumpkin County’s 4 qualifiers are at 135, 140, 155, and 170
Jordan’s 4 qualifiers are at 105, 120, 125, and 135
Tift County’s 4 qualifiers are at 115, 125, 190, and 235
Obviously 145, 155 and 190 will play a huge role for each of the teams. If your school has a wrestler at those weights - matchups could decide which teams move ahead and which fall behind.
Favorite: Woodward Academy
Our favorite is Woodward Academy because they have the best shot of putting at least 4 on the podium. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Greenbrier or Carrollton top them if they can get their hammers to finish higher on the podium, but they might need to get more wins to have that chance. Returning State Champs like Genevieve An at 170, Artemis Eaton at 115, or Jasmine Jenkins-Bey at 130 could play a huge role in the team outcome simply by knocking someone from one of the teams listed above out of the tournament. None of their teams (An’s, Eaton’s, or Jenkins-Bey) will be in the hunt for a title, but each will likely takeaway from points someone on one of the teams above could have earned. Keep an eye on this team race which could come down to the smallest of margins.
Schedule
100 lbs.

Breanna Higgins (Camden County) - 1st in Section 2
Manoela Almeida (Pope ) - 2nd in Section 1; SQ at 100
Jordan Epstein (Greenbrier ) - 2nd in Section 2; 4th at 100
MiKayla Williams (Houston County) - 3rd in Section 1
Jaylee Long (Adairsville ) - 3rd in Section 2
Elise Pennington (Cherokee Bluff) - 4th in Section 1
Carleigh Rau (Pickens ) - 4th in Section 2
Ja`Braisha Lane (Warner Robins) - 5th in Section 1
Ariana Remy-Yee (Wayne County) - 5th in Section 2
Alina Jurovschi (Jackson County) - 6th in Section 1
Caroline Harry (Troup ) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Aneri Patel (Woodward Academy)
Contenders:
Breanna Higgins (Camden County)
Jordan Epstein (Greenbrier)
Manoela Almeida (Pope)
Darkhorse: Jaylee Long (Adairsville)
Bracketbuster: Alina Jurovschi (Jackson County)
Things to know:
Patel is the returning State Runner-up and (I believe) she has wins over both Higgins and Epstein and she beat Almeida at last weekend’s Sectionals
Higgins has beaten Epstein at least twice this season and although the matches are close - we have a tendency to lean to past performance as being a good indicator of future results
Keep an eye on Long - her only loss at sectionals was to Epstein in a 1-0 decision in the semis (looks like it was an escape at the end that got Epstein the win).
105 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Maryori Castro-Grande (Loganville ) - 1st in Section 1
Josephine Royer (Gilmer County) - 1st in Section 2; SQ at 105
Ollie Weiland (White County) - 2nd in Section 1; State Champ at 105
Elizabeth Mayorga (South Gwinnett) - 2nd in Section 2
Kaityln Brown (Dodge County) - 3rd in Section 1; 3rd at 100
Tanjer Akira Smith (Upson Lee) - 3rd in Section 2; SQ at 100
Jaleesa Whaley (Veteran`s ) - 4th in Section 1; 6th at 105
Danyah Ahmed (Greenbrier ) - 4th in Section 2
Kaitlin Coleman (McEachern ) - 5th in Section 1; 6th at 100
Aaliyah Holt (Jordan ) - 5th in Section 2
Seanna McCarthy (East Jackson) - 6th in Section 1
Aniyah Baker (Norcross ) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Ollie Weiland (White County)
Contenders:
Josephine Royer (Gilmer County)
Maryori Castro-Grande (Loganville )
Elizabeth Mayorga (South Gwinnett)
Darkhorse: Kaityln Brown (Dodge County)
Bracketbuster: Kaitlin Coleman (McEachern)
Things to know:
Royer, a returning qualifier at this weight, dominated her section with 4 falls including a 3rd period fall of Mayorga in the finals after leading 9-1.
I’m certain there is some scouting going on regarding Section Champ Maryori Castro-Grande after her run to the Section 1 Title and a fall of defending State Champ Ollie Weiland in the finals. According to the brackets, Castro-Grande was trailing in her matches to Whaley, McCarthy, and Weiland before pulling off the fall. Keep in mind that Weiland beat Castro-Grande at Areas the weekend before.
Picking a favorite here is tough because Weiland has wrestled the best, but she enters the state tournament having been pinned in her section final. Royer looked outstanding but has losses this season as does Castro-Grande. Keep your head on a swivel … don’t be surprised of something wild happens. Royer vs. Weiland on the same side of the bracket should be something to watch.
110 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Brooke French (Allatoona ) - 1st in Section 1; 2nd at 115
Izzy West (Richmond Hill) - 1st in Section 2; 3rd at 110
Bella Mingledorff (North Oconee) - 2nd in Section 1; SQ at 120
Say Paw (Stone Mountain) - 2nd in Section 2; 6th at 110
Emely Mejia-Martinez (Gainesville ) - 3rd in Section 1; SQ at 110
Destine Hirschy (Emanuel County Institute) - 3rd in Section 2; 4th at 105
Anna Santoscoy (Johnson ) - 4th in Section 1; SQ at 110
Brooke Madden (Norcross ) - 4th in Section 2; SQ at 110
Maria Aguado (Alpharetta ) - 5th in Section 1
Nyana Marshall (Hardaway ) - 5th in Section 2; SQ at 110
Kate Panone (Walton ) - 6th in Section 1
Valeria Rivera-Lozano (Dacula ) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Brooke French (Allatoona)
Contenders:
Izzy West (Richmond Hill)
Bella Mingledorff (North Oconee)
Say Paw (Stone Mountain)
Darkhorse: Emely Mejia-Martinez (Gainesville)
Bracketbuster: Nyana Marshall (Hardaway)
Things to know:
According to the records, French is unbeaten at 36-0. She is the returning 115 lb. State Runner-up and easily took care of business on her way to the Section 1 title
West is a returning placer and is 34-2 - don’t think French and West have crossed paths this year. West pinned her way to the Section 2 title last weekend
One to watch is Emely Mejia-Martinez. Mejia-Martinez is 43-2 on the season with her one of her losses coming last weekend to French 10-2 in the semis. She beat Mingledorff (who finished 2nd last weekend) at Areas and is tough out coming for the 3 spot.
115 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Artemis Eaton (North Forsyth) - 1st in Section 1; State Champ at 100
Shaniyah McDaniel (Grovetown ) - 1st in Section 2; SQ at 120
Alanna Garner (River Ridge) - 2nd in Section 1; 4th at 120
Evey Hill (Troup ) - 2nd in Section 2; 6th at 115
Sadie Davis (Tift County) - 3rd in Section 1
Azahria Hall (Seckinger ) - 3rd in Section 2
Kai-Emani Whiteside (Eagles Landing) - 4th in Section 1
Elaina Williams (Meadowcreek ) - 4th in Section 2; SQ at 115
Autumn Freeman (Locust Grove) - 5th in Section 1
Michelle Kowalsky (Evans ) - 5th in Section 2
Kimberly Martinez (Campbell ) - 6th in Section 1
Anna Trishin (North Gwinnett) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Artemis Eaton (North Forsyth)
Contenders:
Shaniyah McDaniel (Grovetown)
Alanna Garner (River Ridge)
Evey Hill (Troup)
Darkhorse: Sadie Davis (Tift County)
Bracketbuster: Michelle Kowalsky (Evans)
Things to know:
Defending State Champ Artemis Eaton is a perfect 39-0 this season and dominated on her way to the Section 1 title (she was on the mat for a total of 3 minutes over 4 matches).
McDaniel won a close one over Evey Hill in sudden victory to take the Section 2 title. McDaniel is 32-2 on the season.
Garner and Hill both made the podium last year and look to do so again in 2024. Sadie Davis of Tift is a name to keep an eye on. Davis’s only section loss came to Eaton in the semis and she enters with a 36-3 record after spending much of the year up at 120 and 126.
120 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Vera Spencer (North Oconee) - 1st in Section 1; State Champ at 115
Alliyah Rone (Jordan ) - 1st in Section 2; SQ at 115
Ella Hughes (Jefferson ) - 2nd in Section 1
Ryan Lewis (Greenbrier ) - 2nd in Section 2; SQ at 115
Zammy Okoli (Woodward Academy) - 3rd in Section 1; 2nd at 120
Liliana Mulero (New Hampstead) - 3rd in Section 2
Cadence Thompson (Winder-Barrow ) - 4th in Section 1; 6th at 120
Mylashia Robinson (Cedartown ) - 4th in Section 2
Riley Flickinger (Houston County) - 5th in Section 1
Audrey Sadler (Rockmart ) - 5th in Section 2
Bree Williams (Hampton ) - 6th in Section 1; SQ at 120
Lily Watson (Lamar County) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Vera Spencer (North Oconee)
Contenders:
Ella Hughes (Jefferson)
Alliyah Rone (Jordan )
Ryan Lewis (Greenbrier )
Darkhorse: Zammy Okoli (Woodward Academy)
Bracketbuster: Bree Williams (Hampton)
Things to know:
Section 1 was a banger and defending State Champ Vera Spencer successfully navigated her way to the title with a 6-3 win over returning State Runner-up Okoli and an 8-4 decision over freshman hammer Ella Hughes.
Keep an eye on the side of the bracket that features Rone, Okoli, and Hughes and returning State Qualifier Bree Williams is tough right off the bat.
125 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Millie Hughes (Jefferson ) - 1st in Section 1; 3rd at 125
Marigona Lau (Glynn Academy) - 1st in Section 2; 2nd at 125
Addison Braswell (Tift County) - 2nd in Section 1; SQ at 125
Brooklyn Duck (Pepperell ) - 2nd in Section 2
Alyssa Roberts (River Ridge) - 3rd in Section 1; 4th at 110
Ivy Andersen (Mill Creek) - 3rd in Section 2
Mckenzie Spradley (Habersham Central) - 4th in Section 1; SQ at 125
Arrie Battle (Jordan ) - 4th in Section 2; SQ at 110
Kimyra Crawford (Colquitt County) - 5th in Section 1
Katlyn Fields (Cedartown ) - 5th in Section 2; State Champ at 120
Mylove Cook (Lovejoy ) - 6th in Section 1; SQ at 130
Madison Knight (Chattahoochee County) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Marigona Lau (Glynn Academy)
Contenders:
Millie Hughes (Jefferson)
Addison Braswell (Tift County)
Brooklyn Duck (Pepperell)
Darkhorse: Ivy Andersen (Mill Creek)
Bracketbuster: Katlyn Fields (Cedartown)
Things to know:
Exceptional weight class that features a Knockout Champ, a Knockout Runner-up, a Georgia State Champ, and a ton of wrestlers that made the podium a year ago.
Margiona Lau and Millie Hughes - your two section champs were outstanding last week. Lau won the 130 lb. bracket at the Knockout and is a returning State Runner-up. Hughes lost in the Knockout finals to perhaps the best wrestler in the SE in South Carolina’s Zao Estrada and is also a returning Georgia placer.
If we get that final it could be one of the best of the night … I say “if” because this bracket is loaded and you can’t look ahead. Ivy Anderson who was 3rd in Section 2 after losing to Brooklyn Duck in the semis was 3rd at the Knockout, Addison Braswell is a returning State Qualifier and gave Hughes a 4-0 match in the Section 1 finals, Alyssa Roberts is a returning placer who had to battle back to 3rd in Section 1 and then you have a returning State Champ in Kaitlyn Fields who lost to Lau in the Section 2 semis and then finished 5th.
130 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Samantha Patton (Cook ) - 1st in Section 1; 2nd at 130
Jasmine Jenkins-Bey (Columbus ) - 1st in Section 2; State Champ at 125
Abby Plemons (Chestatee ) - 2nd in Section 1; 3rd at 130
Bailey Moore (Carrollton ) - 2nd in Section 2; SQ at 125
Anna Skoda (Jackson County) - 3rd in Section 1
Alana Malone (Shaw ) - 3rd in Section 2; 4th at 140
Kelsie Johnson (Ola ) - 4th in Section 1
Leticia Tercero (Gilmer County) - 4th in Section 2; 4th at 125
Siena Malek (Stephens County) - 5th in Section 1; 6th at 125
Nadia Miller (Whitewater ) - 5th in Section 2
Aliyah Washington (Warner Robins) - 6th in Section 1
Rylynn Bridges (Cedartown ) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Jasmine Jenkins-Bey (Columbus)
Contenders:
Samantha Patton (Cook)
Abby Plemons (Chestatee)
Bailey Moore (Carrollton)
Darkhorse: Alana Malone (Shaw)
Bracketbuster: Siena Malek (Stephens County)
Things to know:
This is a tough one … I don’t know if Jenkins-Bey and Patton have wrestled one another this season or not (both have a loss on their record - I know Jenkins-Bey loss came at the Knockout), but you could make an argument for either of these hammers.
Both Jenkins-Bey and Patton were dominant on their way to their section titles and it would be a surprise to see anyone else in the finals … if we get that final expect it to be a great one.
Plemons, Moore, Malone, Tercero, and Malek have all been here before and each has her sights set on the top step as well. This should be a good weight to watch, but it would be a surprise if we didn’t get Jenkins-Bey vs. Patton in the finals.
135 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Elle Kaufmann (Lovett School) - 1st in Section 1; State Champ at 130
Tessa Lopardo (Lakeside ) - 1st in Section 2; 6th at 130
Kori Campbell (Valdosta ) - 2nd in Section 1
Nora Garbuzovas (Lumpkin Co.) - 2nd in Section 2; 3rd at 135
Savannah Chao (Cherokee ) - 3rd in Section 1
Jahajah Banks (Jordan ) - 3rd in Section 2
Samantha Savinon-Rios (Ware County) - 4th in Section 1; SQ at 135
Sakiya Winston (Pepperell ) - 4th in Section 2
Gelsey Aguilar (Hart County) - 5th in Section 1
Maggie Dudley (Carrollton ) - 5th in Section 2; SQ at 130
Zella Weiland (White County) - 6th in Section 1; 6th at 145
Abelinda Tercero (Gilmer County) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Elle Kaufmann (Lovett School)
Contenders:
Tessa Lopardo (Lakeside)
Nora Garbuzovas (Lumpkin Co.)
Kori Campbell (Valdosta)
Darkhorse: Savannah Chao (Cherokee)
Bracketbuster: Zella Weiland (White County)
Things to know:
Kaufmann is the returning State Champ and has been outstanding all season. Her only loss coming to Sofia Delgado of Miami Coral Park in the Knockout finals in December.
It might be a surprise to see returning State Runner-up Nora Garbuzovas on the same side of the bracket, but she forfeited her section finals match to returning State Placer Tessa Lopardo who is 46-3 on the season. Assuming Garbuzovas is back we could see Kaufmann vs. Garbuzovas in the semis and the winner could get Lopardo (although don’t sleep in Valdosta’as Kori Campbell who gave Kaufmann a match in the Section 1 finals).
Zella Weiland is another one to watch … she is a returning state placer before getting injured in the semis to Campbell and injury defaulted to 6th. If she is back that isn’t an easy match right off the scale.
140 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Kiera Gilkes (Banks County) - 1st in Section 1
Greta Garbuzovas (Lumpkin Co.) - 1st in Section 2; State Champ at 140
Ivana Munoz (Chestatee ) - 2nd in Section 1
Kendra Heroch (Chattooga ) - 2nd in Section 2; 2nd at 140
Lily Harris (Ola ) - 3rd in Section 1; SQ at 135
Madison Cooley (Carrollton ) - 3rd in Section 2; 2nd at 145
Delaney James (Ware County) - 4th in Section 1
Trinity Sims (Columbus ) - 4th in Section 2
Daniela Palatchi (Woodward Academy) - 5th in Section 1; SQ at 130
Gabby Waddell (Pepperell ) - 5th in Section 2; SQ at 135
Christiona King (Warner Robins) - 6th in Section 1
Ava O`Shield (Mill Creek) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Greta Garbuzovas (Lumpkin Co.)
Contenders:
Kendra Heroch (Chattooga)
Kiera Gilkes (Banks County)
Ivana Munoz (Chestatee)
Darkhorse: Madison Cooley (Carrollton)
Bracketbuster: Gabby Waddell (Pepperell)
Things to know:
Garbuzovas is your defending State Champ, but this isn’t going to be a cakewalk. She beat Heroch 3-2 in the section finals.
I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t know Kiera Gilkes before this past weekend. She was 3rd in Area 8, but turned it on in the Section 1 tournament with 4 falls on her way to the title.
Cooley might be the easiest darkhorse pick in the tournament … she is a returning state runner-up and if she hadn’t had Heroch and Garbuzovas in her section she would certainly be listed as a contender (she lost to Heroch 5-1 in the quarters and that quarter only happened because Heroch lost to Garbuzovas in the Area final).
145 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Audrey Zents (Woodward Academy) - 1st in Section 1; SQ at 145
Ayana Fletcher (Northside Columbus) - 1st in Section 2; 3rd at 155
Tamiah Benefield (Dodge County) - 2nd in Section 1
Johana Mejia (Carrollton ) - 2nd in Section 2; SQ at 170
Valrie Medina (Lowndes ) - 3rd in Section 1
Kinley Wallace (Cross Creek) - 3rd in Section 2
Mariana Gossett (Osborne ) - 4th in Section 1; SQ at 190
Kylee Bingham (Hiram ) - 4th in Section 2
Chelsea Durie (Oglethorpe County) - 5th in Section 1; SQ at 140
Annaelle Joseph (Mill Creek) - 5th in Section 2
Bradey Bass (Campbell ) - 6th in Section 1
Mya Pilger (Greenbrier ) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Ayana Fletcher (Northside Columbus)
Contenders:
Audrey Zents (Woodward Academy)
Johana Mejia (Carrollton)
Tamiah Benefield (Dodge County)
Darkhorse: Valrie Medina (Lowndes)
Bracketbuster: Chelsea Durie (Oglethorpe County)
Things to know:
Ayana Fletcher is 32-1 on the season, a returning State Placer and the Section 2 Champ after downing Johana Mejia 8-0 in the finals … as a result she is our favorite.
Woodward Academy’s Audrey Zents had quite a weekend on her way to the Section 1 Title. She was the Area 3 Runner-up the weekend before but had 3 falls and then a tough 3-2 sudden victory win over Benefield to take the section title.
Fletcher is the favorite, but beyond that this weight class could be chaos - don’t be surprised to see someone get a hot hand (like Zents did last weekend) and make some noise at 145.
155 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Ariel Maicon (Creekview ) - 1st in Section 1; SQ at 140
Arieana Bacon (Greenbrier ) - 1st in Section 2; 3rd at 140
Efa Oju (Woodward Academy) - 2nd in Section 1; SQ at 140
Aniya McIver (Arabia Mountain) - 2nd in Section 2; SQ at 155
Mariana Perez (Denmark ) - 3rd in Section 1; 4th at 130
Gwennie Wight (Lumpkin Co.) - 3rd in Section 2; SQ at 155
Jocey Byers (Madison County) - 4th in Section 1; SQ at 140
Linda Tercero (Gilmer County) - 4th in Section 2; 6th at 140
Kristin Briggs (South Cobb) - 5th in Section 1; 6th at 170
Jenycha Pierre (Hiram ) - 5th in Section 2
Sharmareya Turner (Gainesville ) - 6th in Section 1
Leia Bossie (Villa Rica) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Arieana Bacon (Greenbrier )
Contenders:
Ariel Maicon (Creekview)
Efa Oju (Woodward Academy)
Aniya McIver (Arabia Mountain)
Darkhorse: Mariana Perez (Denmark)
Bracketbuster: Kristin Briggs (South Cobb)
Things to know:
Hard to choose between the two section champs here. Bacon is 50-2 on the season with an overtime loss to May Prado at the Knockout. Maicon is a perfect 35-0 and both dominated their sections. We give the nod to Bacon based on being a returning placer, but expect this one to be excellent.
The field is full of returning qualifiers and placers, but both Bacon and Maicon have shown they have separated themselves from the pack. Both will need to be focused on the next match and not look ahead, but a Bacon vs. Maicon final seems likely.
170 lbs.
The Field (2024 Section Place; 2023 State Info):
Genevieve An (Kennesaw Mountain) - 1st in Section 1; State Champ at 170
Sierha Lopes (Carrollton ) - 1st in Section 2
Litzy Soto (Gainesville ) - 2nd in Section 1; 3rd at 170
Alexzandriyah Kekoanui (East Coweta) - 2nd in Section 2; SQ at 155
Abby Andersen (Jackson County) - 3rd in Section 1
Pamela Dominguez-Vasquez (Heard County) - 3rd in Section 2
Kylee Rogers (Chestatee ) - 4th in Section 1
Monica McClendon (Lumpkin Co.) - 4th in Section 2
Ashley Saucedo (Woodstock ) - 5th in Section 1
Jewelian Lunceford (Peachtree Ridge) - 5th in Section 2
Fatima Darbo (Campbell ) - 6th in Section 1; SQ at 190
Sha`Miah McNezer (Westover School) - 6th in Section 2
Favorite: Genevieve An (Kennesaw Mountain)
Contenders:
Litzy Soto (Gainesville)
Sierha Lopes (Carrollton)
Alexzandriyah Kekoanui (East Coweta)
Darkhorse: Abby Andersen (Jackson County)
Bracketbuster: Jewelian Lunceford (Peachtree Ridge)
Things to know:
An is the defending State Champion and she beat Litzy Soto (her closest rival) by fall last weekend in the Section 1 Final. Soto has beaten An previously, but it would take a monumental effort for anyone to knock off An in her final trip to Macon.
Soto pinned Section 2 Champ Sierha Lopes at State Duals and that seems like it could be a semifinal matchup.

Terra Burse (Southeast Whitfield) - 1st in Section 2; 4th at 170

Things to know:
A wide open weight with a number of wrestlers that could take the title.
Stokes and Burse each won their sections and as a result sit in the best position to make a run for the top step. But keep in mind Stokes had to win a 2-1 match in the quarters, a 13-8 match in the semis, and a 2-0 match over Doward in the finals. Burse was the Area 7 runner-up to Witherspoon who she beat in the section 2 finals.
Burse takes the favorite spot … her only loss this season was the Witherspoon in the Area 7 finals, but has been outstanding otherwise. Don’t be surprised if Burse has to beat her again for a state title.
Keep an eye on Shania Joseph who is also a returning placer and her only loss last weekend was to Burse in the semifinals.
235 lbs.

Things to know:
Not sure how to look at 235. Taylor Schiesser is making her return from injury and at state duals was dominant. But she was DQ’d for stalling at last week’s sectional semifinals to Adisen Lowell (who then lost to Alya Evans in the finals). Evans, for her part, pinned returning state medalist Rubie Barton in the semis before pinning returning placer Lowell in the finals.
Schiesser did not see DeSouza at State Duals and DeSouza was outstanding her way to the Section 1 title - pinning Edwards in just over a minute.
I think Schiesser is the favorite (she is the returning State Champ in the bracket), but nothing is promised and it will be interesting to see how 235 plays out.
