2022 Georgia State Duals Overview

Things to know:

  • It is a 3-step process to determine the state duals champion in each classification

    • Area/Region Duals are wrestled January 7-8 (Top 4 Teams Advance)

    • Sectional Duals (or Sub-State) are wrestled January 15th (Top Team Advances)

    • Elite 8 State Tournament are wrestled January 22nd

  • By this point in the season I probably do not have to explain the difference between duals and tournaments, but a quick refresher on duals and dual scoring:

    • Order: Most of the time the dual begins at 106 and proceeds through the weight classes and concludes at heavyweight. That is not mandatory and the dual can start anywhere in the 14 weight classes … so if the dual starts at 145 it will proceed through the weight classes until it finishes at 138. As you can see in the example below (I took the dual between Alexander and Valdosta at last year’s state tournament) - the dual began at 138 and finished at 132 (read from top to bottom).

    • Scoring: An individual match is scored just like it always is … 2 points for a takedown, etc. The dual is scored the same way you may have seen throughout the season … but in case you were confused here is a brief idea of how it is done:

      • A fall is worth 6 pts

      • A technical fall (difference between individual wrestlers is 15 or more points) is worth 5 pts.

      • A major decision (difference between individual wrestlers is 8 or more, but under the 15) is worth 4 points.

      • A regular decision (basically a win without a fall, tech fall, or major), is worth 3 points.

      • Teams can be deducted points for a variety of reasons, but I won’t get into that.

Below is an example from last year’s 6A State Tournament between Alexander and Valdosta.

The Schedule:

Here are the Area/Region Tournament Sites for January 7th-8th. It is possible that the sites could (and can change) since this was published … always refer to your coach for the latest information.

Those are the 8 sites for each classification and each will host a number of different teams (and as you can see below the hosts are circled) … We will begin in 1A and work our way up:
