OSWrestle Jan 5 3A Rankings

The Orlando Sentinel’s Brant Parsons has dropped his latest rankings for Florida. Here is a quick look at what caught my eye as I looked through them …

6 New #1’s

There was a big shake-up at the top with 6 new #1’s listed. Anderson Heap took over the top spot at 106 after winning the Knockout - he replaced Christian Guzman of Miami Columbus who finished 3rd. Angelo DeDona claimed the top spot at 113 from South Dade’s Adrian Morales. Palm Harbor’s Alek Chitty climbs to #1 from the #3 spot at 152 and South Dade’s Cordell White move down 2 spots. South Dade’s Sawyer Bartelt was outstanding in claiming the 182 lb. Knockout title and as a result takes over the top spot there.

Edensky Phele of North Miami moves up from #2 as former #1 Gerald Greaves looks to have made the move to 285. But the most surprising new #1 is Wellington’s Mason Powell who went from unranked at 285 to #1 in one big leap. I don’t know why - you’d have to ask Brant Parsons.

19 Wrestlers make their Debut

Rarely do we have a wrestler that debuts in the middle of the season in the top 10 - I’m not sure I’ve seen one debut at #1 before. Wellington’s Mason Powell did that in the latest OSWrestle Rankings at 285. Most (16 of the 19) of the “new” wrestlers came in somewhere between #16 and #20. Ryan Piersza and Elijah Hunt make their debuts at #13. I haven’t been tracking the rankings from the beginning so these wrestlers could be jumping back into the rankings after being out of the December 15th rankings.

Plenty of movers in the latest rankings

Plenty of movers in the latest rankings - I’ve already spoken about Powell jumping into the top spot at 285 … so who else stood out? Riverview’s Phillipe Langelier had a very good Knockout and joins the top 5 at 220. Also making jumps into the top 10 in their weight were Adrian Ochoa, Julian Montero, and Ethan Vugman. In research we talk about a “ceiling effect” where a person can’t make huge gains because they are already at the top (or very near the top). That is the case with the top 10 and in particular the top 5. Vugman making the podium at the Knockout was huge and pushed him from #5 to #3 … not an easy accomplishment.
