OSWrestle Jan 5 2A Rankings
6 New #1’s in 2A
Several wrestlers used the Knockout over the last 2 weeks to springboard to the #1 spot in the latest Orlando Sentinel Rankings. Washburn pinned Guzman in the semis and finished 2nd to take over the top spot at 106. Basile beat former #1 Andrew Austin of Charlotte 8-4 to claim the 126 lb. Knockout title as well as the #1 spot. Brennan Van Hoecke put on a show at the Knockout - pinning defending 3A State Champ Sebastian Melguizo of SW Miami to win the 132 Knockout title and claim the #1 spot in 2A.
Jack Crook beat Oklahoma’s Bryce Dauphin and Woodward Academy’s Michael Kilic to claim the Knockout title at 145 (and yes - the top spot in 2A … he beat the former #1 Christian Moder 6-0 in the quarters of the Knockout). Gavin McDermott was the only wrestler to not benefit for being at the Knockout as he moved from #2 to #1 at 182 after former #1 Joe Burgess of Winter Springs moved down to 170. And Dedric Marshall moved from #2 at 195 to #1 at 220 after downing Chase Thompson of American Heritage Delray Beach in the semis before losing to Harley Andrews of Tuttle Oklahoma in the Knockout finals.
18 wrestlers make their debut
Tampa Freedom’s Hamzah Mohamad followed up a tournament title at the Corey Hill Memorial with a spot on the podium at the Knockout and vaulted himself into the rankings at #3. 17 others joined Mohamad in the rankings this week (making their debut although I don’t know if any were ranked before December 15 because I haven’t been tracking it). Joining Mohamad in the top 10 is Port Charlotte’s Alejandro Villada at #8 at 160 lbs.
Mohamad is the biggest mover
Obviously Mohamad is the biggest mover over the last few weeks - coming from unranked to #3 at 152 lbs. But he isn’t the only Tampa Freedom wrestler to make a move into the top 3 - joined by teammate Ryan Bennett. Villada and McNichols made big moves into the rankings also. Barron Collier’s Cory Cannan used the Knockout as a platform to show he should be in the top 5 and was rewarded with a move from #9 to #5 at 170 (he was #9 at 160).
