Charlie’s Angels-Georgia Pink Grinds Out 11 Victories to Win 2022 Girls Scholastic Duals

By Mike Newbern

After rolling through eight wins in their pool, Charlie’s Angels-GA Pink methodically took down Charlie’s Angels-IL Pink 39-30 in the quarterfinals, 33-30 over Nebraska Tsunami in the semifinals, and 36-31 over STL Green to win the 2022 Girls Gold AAU Scholastic Duals National Bracket. The champions were led by gold medalist and undefeated 145 pounder Lorelai Smith (11-0), three silver medalists including #10 nationally ranked Sidney Sullens (152), Zoey Salmons (100), and Justice Anthony (107). All four recorded falls in the final along with Brooke French (114) and Clara Massa (165). Team Charlie’s Angels GA Pink’s overall balanced line-up helped propel them to 13 victories. Lorelei Smith also added the tournaments Outstanding Wrestler to her haul! The girls from the Peach state finished 9 th in overall team scoring with 473 points. Runner-up and third place teams STL-Green and Iowa Pin-A-Saurus lead the scoring with 669 and 665 points respectively.

After dropping a hard fought 36-30 semifinal to STL-Green, the aptly named Iowa Pin-A-Saurus held off a furious challenge from Nebraska Tsunami 31-30 to claim 3 rd place. They had earlier defeated Nebraska 39-23 in their pool. Border state battles can be very intense. Pin-A-Saurus lead all teams with 82 falls in 132:08. Jason Loyd, the National AAU’s Wrestling 2022 “Person of the Year” and National Girls Chairman had this to say about the tournament’s success.

The AAU National Scholastic Duals was again a stellar event with just under two hundred high school teams and an ever-growing women’s wrestling presence. The event now rivals the Junior duals in size for the girl’s division and places the girls as a positive contribution to our enormous weeklong event. On the girl’s side we had nationally ranked competitors, rising stars, piles and piles of state champions, development of talent, and even internationally experienced athletes.
— Jason Loyd

Loyd later added, “What we offered and provided will help lead the way next year for a community/development division for the girls. Another step forward in expansion and offering more opportunities for growth. The teams in the fight for the title were second to none and some of the best athletes in the country. Our 2022 AAU National Scholastic Duals Champion Team, Charlie’s Angels from Georgia has been in contact with me. They support many of our efforts, are a growing presence in multiple districts, and were over the moon for pulling out the victory.”

This year’s tournament featured 10 nationally ranked and 4 honorable mentioned female wrestlers. STL-Green’s Paige Wehrmeister won the Most Falls in the Least Time with 12 in 11:27. Paige is ranked #6 by WIN Magazine.
