The Grappler Fall Classic in Kalamazoo, Michigan is considered one of the top pre-season tournaments in the country. The southeast was well represented throughout each division, but today let’s look at how the Elite high school division shook out.

Below you will see a table for each weight with the pre-seed, seed, and finish included … they are ordered by their finish. NR means not registered at the time of the pre-seeds. It is always interesting to see who outperformed their seeds.

98 pounds

The number 1 seed was Jarrett Smith from Rudyard, Michigan, while the number 2 seed was Teequavious Mills from Stone Mountain, Georgia. Smith would knock off Triston Mouton from Chattanooga, Tennessee in the quarterfinals before majoring Ryan Totten from Hartland, Michigan to reach the finals. Mills would tech fall EJ Smith from Auburn, Michigan in the quarterfinals and then major Jaclyn Bouzakis from Shavertown, Pennsylvania to reach the finals as well. The number 1 and number 2 seeds would clash with Smith pinning Mills late in the match to secure the 98-pound bracket.

105 pounds

Gavin Landers from Denver, Iowa was the number 1 seed, and Mason Katschor from Monroe, Michigan was seeded number 2. Landers was dominant as he would reach the finals picking up two pins and two majors. Katschor would get edged out 5-3 in the semifinals by Anthony Garza from Clovis, California. Landers would meet Garza in the finals and win the 105-pound bracket with a 4-2 decision win.

This was the Joseph Uhorchuk show at 112-pounds. Uhorchuk from Chattanooga, Tennessee would be seeded number 2, with Grey Burnett from Wauseon, OH being the number 1 seed to start the day. Uhorchuk would pickup five straight pins to reach the finals, with three of them coming in the first period. Burnett would have a similar run to the finals with a pin, a tech fall, and a major decision along the way before meeting Uhorchuk in the finals. Uhorchuk would grab the 4-2 decision win over Burnett and the 112-pound bracket. Quite an impressive performance at such a high-level tournament.

Carson Dupill from Greeneville, TN was seeded number 2 at 119-pounds to begin the day, with Tyler Dekraker from Warrenton, PA seeded number 1. Dekraker would narrowly edge out Luis Acevedo from Homestead, FL with a 5-3 sudden victory in the semifinals to reach the finals. Dupill would drop a tight semifinals match to Antonio Mills III from Douglasville, GA 5-2. Dekraker would major Mills and win the 119-pound bracket.

Seth Mendoza from Mokena, IL began the day as the number 1 seed, while 2x Geogia state champion Jake Crapps from Cartersville, GA was seeded number 2. Mendoza would be dominant in-route to reaching the semifinals and defeating Ethan Uhorchuk from Signal Mountain, TN 9-3, before meeting Crapps in the finals. Crapps would grab two pins and a major decision before narrowly defeating Jackson Blum from Martin, MI 5-3 in the semifinals to setup the match with Mendoza. Mendoza would pin Crapps late in the match to secure the 125-pound bracket.

NIKADE ZINKIN from FRESNO, CA would be seeded number 1 and Cameron Chinavar from Dundee, MI would be seeded number 2 at 130-pounds. Zinkin would win four straight decisions to punch his ticket to the finals, while Chinavar would drop a tight 11-9 decision to Christian Fretwell from Ruskin, FL. Zinkin would top Fretwell in the finals 7-3 to win the 130-pound bracket. Fretwell downed South Carolina hammer Chandler Sewell 17-5 before downing Chinavere 11-9 in the semis.

Matt Hart from the Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN would pull the number 2 seed at 135-pounds, while Elvis Solis from Homestead, FL would draw number 1. Solis would win a tight 5-3 decision in the semifinals over Casen Roark from Mt Juliet, TN to head to the finals, while Hart would drop a heartbreaker in the semifinals to Gunner Andrick from Letart, WV 2-1. Andrick would go on to defeat Solis 3-1 in the finals and win the 135-pound bracket.

Tyler Guerra from Wood Dale, IL would be the number 1 seed at 140-pounds, while another Baylor School wrestler would be seeded number 2. Nate Askew from Chattanooga, TN. Askew would narrowly edge out Ryan Phillips from Casselberry, FL in the quarterfinals, before getting majored by Blake Cosby from Maybee, MI in the semifinals. Guerra would pick up two pins and two majors on his way to a final’s appearance. Guerra would then defeat Cosby 4-1 to win the 140-pound bracket.

Gates would pick up three straight pins, before being defeated 4-2 in the semifinals by Jaydon Robinson from Monee, IL. Catrabone would have two pins and a tech fall on his way to a tight 4-2 decision win in the semifinal over Ayson Rice from Sioux Falls, SD. Catrabone would defeat Robinson 2-1 in the finals to win the 145-pound bracket.

Sturgill would pick up a pin and a major before edging out Brayden Brown from Lebanon, OH 5-3 in the quarterfinals. Sturgill would then drop a tight 6-5 decision to Casper Stewart from Batavia, NY in the semifinals. Bouzakis would have two pins and a major decision before narrowly defeating Gianni Maldonado from Valrico, FL 4-3 in the semifinals. Stewart would pin Bouzakis in the finals to win the 152-pound bracket.

We’re mentioning the Baylor School out of Chattanooga, Tennessee quite a bit, and 160-pounds this would also be the case. Maximus Norman from Hiltons, TN was seeded number 1 and did not look back. Norman would pick up three straight pins to start the day before defeating Tristin Greene from Lorain, OH 3-1 in the quarterfinals and Edmund Enright from Chicago, IL 5-2 in the semifinals. Christopher Mance from Atlanta, Georgia would be seeded number 2. He would pick up two major decisions and a pin before defeating Connor Holm from Elyria, OH 4-0 in the quarterfinals. Mance would drop the semifinals match to Kendrick Hodge from Miami, FL in a tight 5-4 decision. Norman would defeat Hodge 10-3 in the finals and win the 160-pound bracket.

Bambinelli would pick up two tech falls, a major decision, and a pin to secure his spot in the finals. Kelly would be nearly equally as dominant with two pins and a tech fall before defeating Tyler Secoy from Columbus, GA 10-3 in the semifinals. Kelly would then narrowly defeat Bambinelli 3-1 to win the 171-pound bracket.

At 189-pounds Illinois would dominate. Matthew Jens from Grayslake, IL would be seeded number 1 and Matthew Kubas from Libertyville, IL would be seeded number 2. Both Jens and Kubas would battle through a tough bracket with some tight wins to meet in the finals. Jens would get a first-round pin and a second-round major before edging out Christopher Sanchez from Miami, FL 5-3 in the semifinals. Kubas would pick up a tech fall in round-one, followed by a pair of decision wins to enter the finals. Jens would defeat Kubas in a tight match 6-4 to win the 189-pound bracket. Interesting to see two from the same state in the finals.

Aaron Riner from Cumming, GA would begin the day as the number 1 seed, but be defeated 5-3 by Logan Tollison from Grand Ledge, MI in the opening round. Tollison would then get pinned by Caden Brewer from Avon, IN in the semifinals at the top of the bracket. Number 2 seed Connor Bercume from Novi, MI would win his opening match via major before grabbing a decision win in the semifinals over Elias Corona from Oakdale, CA 10-5. Bercume would pin Brewer in the finals to win the 215-pound bracket.

Emilio Johnson from Oakdale, CA would be seeded number 1 at 285 pounds, while Zachary Hayes from South Haven, MI would be seeded number 2. Hayes would forfeit out leading the way for Tanner Craft from Leslie, MI to get into the finals. Johnson would grab a major in his semifinals match in a small bracket, before defeating Craft 7-1 in the finals and winning the 285-pound bracket.
