State of the Program ... Cary (NC)

Cary (NC)

If you have been around wrestling in the Southeast for any amount of time … you know the tradition of the Cary wrestling program. The Imps have won 12 Traditional State Titles and 9 Dual State Titles including an impressive streak in the early 2000’s. Although the Imps haven’t claimed the top spot in a number of years (2018 Dual Champs) - they are always in the mix and the expectations are always the same - to compete for a state title.

Cary finished 6th in 4A in 2020, but return nearly all of their hammers and should be in the mix for the top step in February. Rylan Vann returns after claiming the 285 lb. title in 2021 and has to be the favorite to claim another title in 2022. Sam Grena finished 2nd at 152, Johnny Ramos was 4th at 106, and Jake Wolfram qualified for the state tournament … each has the ability to climb to the top spot as well. Whether Cary can knock off Gibbons, Laney, Hough, and the others will likely come down to how well some of the other wrestlers compete. Keep an eye on Ezra Jack, Majdi Hasan, and Kerim Annagurbanov as well as Omarien Woodly who returns to the mat after taking the spring season off with football being right around the corner. Woodly is a very good athlete and with a little improvement has a shot at being on the podium in 2021-2022.

The team is looking good at the moment. A year older with 12 wrestlers coming back from the shortened spring season. With that much experience coming back the firepower is here to contend for a state title. Still the East is tough having to go through Pinecrest, Laney, and Cardinal Gibbons.
